Girl Gets Snaps as Quarterback for Florida High School [Broward County/South Plantation High]

Normally a third-string quarterback coming into a preseason game doesn't draw much attention. But it definitely did last Friday, when Erin DiMeglio got her first snap for the South Plantation High School. After all, DiMeglio may just be making Florida history, the Sun Sentinel reports. "I couldn't take the smile off my face," she says. "You'd think the other team would want to know why I'm there, but other players have been great."

State records indicate that 523 girls have played high school football since 1973, but it's unclear how many, if any, played quarterback. "I've never seen anything like this before," one local analyst says. DiMeglio's coach says he had other girls try out for the team just this year, but they couldn't cut it. "Erin can actually do what we ask of her," he says. Still, the 5-6, 160-pound DiMeglio doesn't think her real future is in football; she's just hoping her multi-sport athleticism will impress college basketball scouts.

I have no problem with this, so long as a tough tackle on her isn't dubbed a "hate crime".

Disagree here.. if girls want to play football they need to start their own school league. Nothing against the girls abilities but this is nothing more than apeasement and political correctness.

In California, I have seen several female place-kickers, mostly in eight man football.

Separate but equal? I'm thinking if the coach doesn't think she can take it, he wouldn't let her play. Women's sports are notoriously underfunded...why not let the one girl who can play with the boys have a shot? I haven't read the story yet, but I bet she has brothers.

She looks quite serious about it.

Perhaps, until the lawyers get involved.

Never seen her take a snap so who knows. I will say 5’6” 160, unless she runs a 4.4 40, would be a huge deficit to overcome at most high school levels. My high school won the state championship 20 years ago and everybody in the backfield was at least 6’1” and 190 and 2 backs were over 230.

I think it’s likely she has the ability to play at the booys’ level but am concerned that she might be injured in her sensitive area during a hard tackle. But QBs don’t take as many hard tackles as other positions. And on second thought, males have their sensitive areas too.

Separate but equal works for me if that’s how you see it.

“I’m thinking if the coach doesn’t think she can take it, he wouldn’t let her play.”

I’m thinking he doesn’t want to be harassed by a public school system that would force him to let her play or be fired.

To make things “more equal” there’s probably rules on how to tackle if allowed, be easy, no name calling, be careful where you touch, no rude gestures and if the other side is allowed to win there’s probably a max number of points they can’t win by.

Change for the sake of change is BS.

I’m just waiting for the first law suit she files after having the living shit knocked out of her by a 200 pound tackle.

Worse yet, the 200 pound tackle won’t really rush her because he would be afraid of a discrimination or hate crime style suit for doing so.

We’ve gone to hell in a hand basket!

Does anyone seriously doubt women (I know there are exceptions, there are exceptions to everything)have a lighter bone structure and are weaker overall than men?

What happens if a female running back or a tight end gets totally hammered on a play and as a result dies? I think we all know what happens. Huge law suit claiming the school “knew or should have known of the documented physical disparity between the sexes and not allowed mixed teams.”, or something along those lines.

This is about PC, pure and simple. It is only a matter of time before we see what I have described happen.

A few years back a girl at my daughter’s HS school scored the first running TD by a female in our states history. On the drive before that, she threw a perfect pass, right in the numbers, to a guy in the end zone but he dropped it.

Interesting she didn’t take any snaps with shoulder pads on...last time I put shoulder pads on, I don’t recall having much room for a set of ta ta...

If she can run a offense take a hit and be a leader on the field...I guess more power to her...

Just don’t cry when you get blindsided and hit by some 225 lb outside linbackers and you take a face plant in the dirt...

Oh and if you hurt like a broken neck...

Sorry ladies boys and girls are built different..

You know it's going to happen. When college scholarships are on the line, and scouts start showing up at games, it's no longer just "playing football." It's for all the marbles. I had a friend who was taken out of play by a nasty prearranged hit. The opposing team lost 15 yards in penalty. My friend lost a college scholarship and the ability to walk normally for the rest of his life.

Oh yeah, she was playing QB and had played since an early age. I wouldn’t recommend this for all females.

there was also an agreement between the school and the parents that she doe snot have the ball as much and the plays are different as they do not want her to get hurt or tackeled like a guy.

This is plain stupid and the girl obviously is insecure to do this stunt.

Girls should play with girls, boys with boys. This is an unfair advantage because the other team will be hesitant to tackle her. I was brought up to be polite to girls. Hopefully, some of these boys were as well. Also, football players naturally pat each other to say “attaboy” or “better luck next time”. This stinks of law suit.

Yes. If she can do the job as good the other candidates, then she can have it. It she’s the best, then she should be the starter.
