GOP: Obama's 'You Didn't Build That' Will Take Us to November -- IPhone covers sell like hotcakes
Sunshine State News ^ | August 30, 2012 | Jim Saunders

It was one line --- a total of nine words --- in a lengthy speech in Roanoke, Va.

As he tried to make a point that successful people have received help in various ways, President Obama said, "If you've got a business --- you didn't build that."

But more than a month later, with Republicans rallying in Tampa at their national convention, that line has become a centerpiece of the GOP's campaign to try to oust Obama in November.

Speaker after speaker has portrayed the line as an affront to people who have built businesses and as evidence that the Democratic president is focused on big government instead of free enterprise. Republican leaders went so far as to give Tuesday night's convention session the theme, "We Built It."

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam said Wednesday that the GOP will continue to focus on the issue until the November election as it tries to draw distinctions between Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney. He said many voters understand that small-businesspeople "pour blood, sweat and tears" into making their ventures succeed.

I remember how Bush 1’s “Read my lips..” was flogged relentlessly for many months by the democrats and the media right up to election day.

Payback is a bitch!

The ObamaMedia is in high gear writing lengthly articles, desperately spinning in their heroic efforts to drag Obama out his socialism "gaffe" ditch.

You're right - it wasn't just one line. Then again, this was probably written by a liberal journalists - and well, they lie.

"If you've got a business --- you didn't build that."

Its hilarious listening to the left trying to claim this statement was taken out of context. Its a wonder they any credibility at all left.

No, it was not just one line as this article claims.

Correct. The line (itself plagiarized from faux squaw Warren) was part of a broader invective that denigrated the hard work and talent of successful business owners, and instead praising the government for providing the "infrastructure" that those business use. Not pointing out, of course, that the "government" didn't do anything without taking the resources from the business owners and their employees, and that the infrastructure was only needed because those business exist, not the other way around.

Regardless of whether or not the line has been taken out of context (and I disagree with the notion that it has; if anything, the context is worse) it resonates because it crystallizes Obama's attitude toward the private sector perfectly.

When they say it was taken out of context, ask them what the context was.

The whole theme was that business owners don’t deserve the profits of their businesses and therefore any confiscatory tax rates are justified.

The line I've heard is Obama meant they didn't build the roads & bridges & schools that supported their business.

Except thats not what he said.

NM Gov. Susana Martinez speaking at the RNC:

“If [Obama] can take credit for government building small businesses, then he can accept responsibility for breaking his promise and adding $5 trillion to the national debt.

Because he did build that.”

“Its hilarious listening to the left trying to claim this statement was taken out of context.”

True. And, as Romney has said, if you take the whole statement IN context... it’s WORSE!

I always answer that with, “yeah, I know, he’s such a great orator that he uses ‘that’ to reference the phrase ‘roads and bridges’. Great orators say ‘that roads and bridges’ all the time.”

See, I don’t think it’s just about justifying confiscatory tax rates, I think it also lays the ground work for asset confiscation/nationalization not unlike those that happen in Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela.
