MICHIGAN, August 28, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney told an interviewer this week that he supports legal abortion in cases that threaten either life or health of mother, as well as rape and incest.
The former Massachusetts governor emphasized his differences with the GOP platform position on abortion, which embraces a pro-life position without exceptions, during a CBS interview at a campaign stop in Michigan.
The platform as written at this convention for the Republicans does not allow for exceptions on abortion with regard to the health of the mother or rape or incest. Is that where you are? asked CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley.
No. My position has been clear throughout this campaign. Im in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother, said Romney.
The candidate, expected to receive the Republican nomination on Thursday, said the abortion issue does not belong in the political arena and is a question for the courts: But recognize, this is a decision that will be made by the Supreme Court. The Democrats try and make this a political issue every four years, but this is a matter in the courts. Its been settled for some time in the courts.
Ive come down on the side of life. I respect people who have a different point of view. ... But this issue of life is an important one. And we have different views on this and people should consider them, he said.
“Do you have a link to HWs 1980s abortion position, and 1988?”
...it was during a debate and he said it very quickly as if to try and throw it away but he said it. I remember vividly. I’ll try and find a link.
You sound like the last three guys at the Alamo, huddled in a corner, counting their last 2 bullets. Is this what Romney has already made of the pro-life party? This is how you campaign for him to win our votes?
In almost an instant, the mere nomination of Romney is already destroying the very foundations of conservatism.
I copied this directly from the 1988 debate Bush vs Dukakis. Bush said... “And you see, yes, my position has evolved. And it’s continuing to evolve, and it’s evolving in favor of life. And I have had a couple of exceptions that I support -rape, incest and the life of the mother.”
Why did you change what Romney said if your pro-abortion argument is valid?
Romney said HEALTH OF MOTHER, we know what that means, many of us did not in 1966, but 46 years later there is no question that it means pretty much abortion on demand.
So you misspoke then, Romney’s position is HEALTH of mother.
I would disagree, and I think you’re splitting hairs. However, I’m not about to argue the point.
Disagree about what, the fact that you are lying about his position, or are you claiming that after 45 years of abortion awareness, that you had never heard that there was a world of difference between “life” of the mother, and “health” of the mother?
