Romney Party Yacht Flies Cayman Islands Flag

Gov. Mitt Romney's campaign toasted its top donors Wednesday aboard a 150-foot yacht flying the flag of the Cayman Islands.

The floating party, hosted by a Florida developer on his yacht "Cracker Bay," was one of a dozen exclusive events meant to nurture those who have raised more than $1 million for Romney's bid.

"I think it's ironic they do this aboard a yacht that doesn't even pay its taxes," said a woman who lives aboard a much smaller boat moored at the St. Petersburg Municipal Marina.

Romney's Cayman-based investments have come under fire during the campaign.

The event, attended by no more than 50 people, along with Romney relatives, including older brother Scott, appeared on no public calendars. ABC News obtained a schedule of the Romney campaign's "Victory Council" and waited dockside to speak with members.

"It was a really nice event. These are good supporters," said billionaire Wilbur Ross, an energy industry executive.

I wonder how many yachts are actually registered in the United States any more.

Wasn't there a bill passed in the first two years of the Clinton administration which imposed a hefty tax on yachts?

As I recall, it raised almost none of the projected revenue because the one American company in Connecticut which built yachts decided to move operations out of the country as did most of the owners who registered yachts.

Just think if the States would get their heads out of their butts they could set up a tax system that would encourage people to register their expensive boats in their States! I know a guy who lives in an air-park in AZ that keeps his plane in Nevada because AZ property tax is too high. He has a house in an air-park but instead of a plane in the hanger he has cars...

There was a time when Free Republic opposed foreign political donations to promote leftism in this country:

Gore's Meltdown

By Charles Krauthammer
Friday, March 7, 1997; Page A21

"There is no controlling legal authority that says this was in violation of law."
-- Al Gore, seven times (in one form or another), White House news conference, March 3

"Controlling legal authority." Whatever other legacies Al Gore leaves behind between now and retirement, he forever bequeaths this newest weasel word to the lexicon of American political corruption.

Gore is talking here about his phone calls from the White House soliciting Democratic campaign contributions. Now, he cannot say, "I have broken no law," because Section 607 of Title 18 of the U.S. Criminal Code states very clearly there is to be no solicitation of campaign funds in federal government offices. Gore broke the law as written, as understood and as practiced. His defense? Apparently, that there are no cases testing the law. So there.

The problem for Gore is not just that Mr. Clean is taking refuge in one of the flimsiest legal confections of our time but that this flimsy confection is directly contradicted by his own president.

That's the point. It was the yacht of foreign investors who want to buy our freedom.

It wasn't Gore's Buddhist monastery, was it? Did you think that was okay, back then?

And your point is...?

PS - The story has been debunked. The flag is in fact that of Bermuda.

Why can't an American own a home or a yacht in another country?

What the blank does that have to do with anything?

And why are cryptosocialist FReepers buying into this MSM spin?

Idiots are incapable of embarrassment. If stalwart TEA party conservative Mike Lee were the GOP nominee, these goons would still be spouting their drivel because he is a Mormon.

Bermuda is not part of the United States. They are both British overseas territories. As such, donations from both are illegal. Unless you are Gore/Romney.

It was the yacht of foreign investors who want to buy our freedom.

The owner of the yacht is Gary Morse, born and raised in Michigan.

Some FReepers are as bad as MSNBC when it comes to factchecking.

Willard does NOT own the yacht. A donor does.

From the article: “The Cracker Bay is owned by Gary Morse, developer of the Villages retirement community.”

How is this Romney’s boat?

Scuse me guys this made the rounds yesterday and it is a donors yacht - Not Romney’s flying the flag. ABC is just trying to wring out everything they can from the story.
