Is Mitt Becoming More Conservative?
The American Thinker ^ | August 31, 2012 | Rosslyn Smith

Posted on 08/31/2012 12:49:30 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

...Protecting the middle class might be the theme of Obama's campaign ads, but the defining movement of this campaign came when Obama belittled the efforts of Main Street America when he stated that "you didn't build that." Those sneering words about smart, hardworking people revealed the ugly side of Obama's redistributionalist ideology. As in 2008, most of the media accept all the carefully scripted images of Obama as Gospel truth while they busy themselves trying to either hide or spin away all those extemporaneous words and deeds that display Obama's true beliefs and character as being either out of context or aberrational....

This campaign is coming down to two competing views of America. As it plays out, I think something very profound may be happening to Mitt Romney. Romney reminds me of a good many smart businessmen I have known. They live their own lives by a set of solid small-c conservative rules, but they are too busy solving smaller daily problems to think much about political conservatism as a coherent system. Such people often pay lip service to the left-of-center conventional media wisdom about big government and public morality even as they rigorously practice all the bourgeois virtues of thrift, hard work, neighborliness, sobriety, and sexual continence in their personal affairs.

....this very smart, very competitive man is facing an opponent who is perhaps the most rigidly ideological man ever to become president. Romney doesn't like what he sees happening to the nation, nor does he much like the person he is running against. Confronted with the problem of beating not just the person, but also the ideology, and then fixing what is broken, Romney may be discovering for the very first time that he is actually far more ideological than he ever thought he was.

The time of fighting yesterday’s battles are done.

Time to get Obama OUT of the White House!

August 27, was only 4 days ago, shouldn’t we take up that battle?

I know the primary is over, Mitt says that he openly campaigned on being a “health of the mother” abortion candidate, is that true?

He won you over, did you know that was his abortion position?

You may want to keep in mind that most any one would be better than what we have right now, including a used car salesman, not that I have anything against them and would be doing it in a split second if I had to. Besides Mitt is a business man and understands how it works and this clown who is in charge right now could not even run a popcorn stand if he had to. So I would suggest to set aside your religious differences and vote for what is best for this country.Besides Mitt had given more than his fair share as charitable contribution what should count for something and speaks well for his character and shows that he cares.

Spit it out. Give me more than your tossed out questions.

Good response to him - they have the attacks but nothing in the way of a better plan (unless it's a secret plan that only folks with their gigantic intellects can possible grasp). I personally believe he was always a bit more conservative than was readily observable - it takes some skills to operate in a 80%+ Dim environment like he did as Gov.

When you actually do something positive on this site that relates to conservativism, then you can ping me.

Bub, you have no idea about how deeply involved he has been in fighting hard in the trenches with us for the Conservative cause. You're the Romney troll, so get lost.

I don't understand how social conservatives can't seem to grasp the concept that the way to implement social reform is through the budget. The liberals learned this a long time ago. If you want abortion, fund abortion. If you don't want abortion, don't fund it. I can guarantee you that if they removed payments for condoms and abortions from the budget, abortions will go down. Throw in a regulation making every expected mother to go through a sonogram and abortion will drop further. That is why the left fights against these things. Will it stop abortions? No. You will NEVER stop it. But we don't have to support it with tax payer dollars and we can prevent it with regulations.

I've never been impressed with Mitt and he wasn't even my last choice of all the candidates. But here we are. Given the choice between Romney or Obama, I'll hold my nose and vote for Romney with the hope that Paul Ryan will have his ear. I think Paul understand.

Hasn’t he already proceeded to marginalize the right, and the tea party, and Palin?

Hasn’t he already switched back to being pro-abortion”

You must be thinking of the other guy you and others would as soon see reelected, such is your virulent hatred.

Still, I think he's on to something with the small c conservative label. If the pro and anti Mitt cyber warriors can stop flaming each other for a bit and consider the possibility that the writer is not spewing propaganda, it does seem to fit.

We always sneer at the concept of a person who “says what's necessary to get elected” without even considering the possibility that a person with serious long-term goals Conservative goals could do the same.

Romney has paid his dues in both arenas — politics and business — and the more I watch him and look at his past record, I am convinced that I am seeing a person who fully understands the old saw that, “politics is the art of the possible”.

His tenacity has to be acknowledged, even by those who deplore him, because without it in all its ruthless glory, he wouldn't be the nominee. I am not pleased at the way he did it, but to throw another cliche out there, “politics ain't beanbag” and he can't fix things until he can get his hands on the controls.

And this is where his selection of Ryan makes the most sense. The businessman side of Romney knows clearly that unless serious repairs are made there, the whole bloody system is going to fall apart. He can do the math.

Ryan is definitely the man to convince the voters about that, and in a way they understand and can agree with.

On the Conservative side, small c Romney has always been a full-fledged Conservative in his personal life. Anti-Mormons, as much as they may dislike the religion, have to admit his life story is a testament to the virtues and values of home, family, charity, good works, patriotism, and professional endeavor.

He may regret some of the deals he made along the way, who doesn't, but I am starting to get the sense that as the magnitude of his task becomes more apparent and the damage done to the nation becomes more frightening, he's made the decision to get back to basics there as well.

Writing all this out, I am still not totally sold, but that is where my gut is taking me right now. And it's not really a bad place.

During his kennedy debate... romney referenced his mother as the woman who in 1970, instilled support for abortion into his core and he proclaimed he was pro choice because of her... and he explained how active she was in the movement to codify abortion rights. romney may be the only winning choice for many but rest assured that you lose votes trying to paint him as something that he is not. He is who he is IMHO. Find the positives and promote them... but selling shoe polish as soap will win few customers.

I was very pleased by the American exceptionalism tone of Romney's speech last night.

As was I; I think he could be a great President and amy very comfortable voting a straight Republican ticket. I have no reservation whatsoever. My favorite candidates were Perry and Gingrich but I'm not sure they could have won a general election. I think Romney can. He is an effective communicator and I like his choice of Paul Ryan for VP. If he also brings back John Bolton I will be even more pleased.
