The U.S. Justice Department says it has reached a settlement with the Sacramento (California) Public Library over a trial program the library was conducting that let patrons borrow Barnes and Noble NOOK e-book readers. DOJ and the National Federation of the Blind objected to the program on grounds that blind people could not use the NOOK e-readers for technological reasons. The Justice Department said the settlement is aimed at stopping discrimination: “Emerging technologies like e-readers are changing the way we interact with the world around us and we need to ensure that people with disabilities are not

And, highway signs that can’t be read by the blind.

Don't give them any ideas!

“Cripes! Next they’ll take cars away from us because blind people can’t drive.”

Heck, let the blind drive. The problem will resolve itself in a few days. :)

“leave us mere Estate Planners alone”

If Obama continues as president, our estates will continue to evaporate and you will become a victim of attrition. :-o

Yeah, how dare they offer books to people who can read.

LOL. Don't worry, the DMV is next.

Don’t know about Nook but my Kindle will read to me. It’s without nuance and emotion, but it definitely reads to me.

What about those books on tape? Those have been out for years but I don’t “see” deaf patrons throwing fits.

My mother was legally blind and could order books on tape free of charge from the State Library for the Blind in our state capital.
They loaned her a special tape player and sent large print catalogs. There was no postage either. The books were varied and current. But you need a specail form filled out by your doctor to receive this service. It IS NOT AVAILABLE to sighted people. I don’t think that is discrimination.

This is the pernicious mission creep from the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and an activist executive branch (DoJ) along with a single interest public pressure group, AFB (American Federation for the Blind). It is a good example of using a broadsword to slice a tomato.

This was a pilot project with private assistance from B&N using their eReader, yet the US Government charges in to ‘protect’ the visually handicapped. Is this progress or is this dictatorship?

F.Y.I. this kind of thing is why I FEAR and LOATHE Obamacare. It is not just what is hiding in those 2.000+ pages, it is what activists can glean from its penumbras and intentions!

Next on the DOJ hit list: Strip clubs because the disabled customers cannot see the dancers. And the dancers refuse to have Braille tattooed to certain areas of their bodies.
Once again the Statist believe in the equality of outcomes. They will not be satisfied until we are like North Korea or Cuba where everyone is equal and has nothing of their own.

Harrison Bergeron

America needs to realize that the Left isn’t kidding.

Obama to conservatives, “Please stay home, don’t vote, and thanks for more flexibility in my final term.”

Get rid of the ADA. It’s a Hilary-inspired abomination and violates the Constitution.

I believe this is your man:

Take a look at his pedigree. People like him infect every level of our government. If ywe think we can clear this mess in a single election we’re fatally naive.

Bingo. There are “non-profit” firms set up by greedy Left-wing lawyers just to cull money from violators of ridiculous government policies. They get a bounty, a cut of the settlement or a bonus for doing so.

This kind of government sponsored extortion has been around a long time in real estate.

I don’t know what you’re referring to in this post, but the real problem is the ADA is just one of thousands of legal land mines that never get removed or cleaned up. They sit there through a nominally center-right administration only to be resurrected as a weapon when a leftist gets into power.

If our republic is to endure we must have a way of actively and aggressively purging these unConstitutional garbage laws. For instance, why did we vote to renew the Voting Rights Act? Why don’t we water it down this time around? Our side has got to be more savvy.

Seems that way. Doesn't Big Sis' Napalitano remind you of the 'handicapper general'?
