Eastwood Rightly Mocks An Empty-Chair Presidency
IBD EDITORIALS ^ | August 31, 2012

Tampa 2012: In remarks to a chair as vacant as the one in the Oval Office, a Hollywood icon reminds us that the president is a failed employee of the people and it's time to let him go.

As performance shtick, it may not have come off perfectly. But judging from the reaction from those "left of Lenin," as 82-year-old Hollywood legend described it during a sort of surprise appearance at the Republican National Convention Thursday, it skewered our absentee president perfectly.

"Clint, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic," tweeted "left of Lenin" film critic Roger Ebert as Eastwood ad-libbed Thursday night to an audience of millions — and one empty chair. "He didn't need to do this to himself. It's unworthy of him."

Eastwood's point, though delivered haltingly, was that President Obama is unworthy of the great nation he disparages and apologizes for incessantly, and that our failed employee should be given his walking papers.

Ebert and others miss the point that it is what Obama has done to us that is sad and pathetic.

Clint’s message was that not everyone in Hollywood is a leftist squish.

Lord knows, the SoCal clowncar is going to unload like apes on PCP next week, and gauging by the tweets its already began.

Hollywood’s been trying to sell us on a ‘different’ version of America. ABC is coming out with a series about a U-boat commander that refuses a legal nuclear launch order and instead launches against the US. Some other outfit is coming out with a show called ‘The New Normal’ about a gay couple.

The message couldn’t be clearer: Get used to a new, gay, European-style America. That’s what’s coming out of Hollywood, and Clint was there to say, it’s not completely true.

Eastwood’s presentation may not have been polished and perfect - but - there is now doubt HE was the only ‘common man’ among elitists on that stage, and the only man whose word can be trusted, ie. the rest were politicians, which means they lie, cheat, and when they’re not kissing babies they’re stealing the kid’s candy - ‘M.C.’

I’m really sick of the mdia attacks on Clint Eastwood. How dare he mock Obama! They are so offended.

My mater (80+, lifelong Republican/former county GOP official) liked Clint's appearance- she thought it was honest and occasionally humorous. She also informed me that the congenital Dems she socializes with were seriously, SERIOUSLY furious about the episode, and were reverting - typically for statists - to questioning his mental health. Was his appearance effective? Well, I don't generally cuss if the bee doesn't sting me.

I have heard some people remark about his delivery and such, but for me, I saw and heard echoes of men I have known... who over the years had tried to get someone - sometimes me - straightened out without going ballistic.

You know, at 60 I’m not getting any younger but I’d like to once more feel the crunch of a nose as my fist flattens it on a shmuck like Roger Ebert.

Since this bad joke of a president hasn’t met with his Jobs Council since January, the empty chair was most appropriate.

He’s had time to make out his NCAA basketball tourney brackets, welcome sports teams to the White House, play umpteen rounds of golf, go on countless campaign jaunts, but he can’t meet with the worthless committee he appointed to act as though he was doing something about the 15% real unemployment rate.

Tactically excellent, strategically stupid.

Someone was listening to Mark Levin this evening.

As another FReeper observed it was a calculated performance by Eastwood. There were subtle signs I saw last night, and couldn’t quite believe until finding a confirmation here, that Clint was following a prepared script playing a fuddy duddy, the kind that many seniors in the audience would identify with. The result is such that Clint Eastwood defined the campaign for the Bishop, something that 100 TV ads and a dozen too clever by half DC consultants could never do! Brilliant!

Oh, and third, do you remember what just a week ago consumed the media and blogosphere? Akin, Akin, Akin. Where is Mr. Akin now? Nobody cares. He's dropped off the media map as they attack Eastwood.

You get an A for being ............

Astute.

I agree - Eastwood’s “shtick” was absolutely brilliant! And, I believe it was not at all unplanned. This is an accomplished iconic actor who’s no dottering old fool. When I was at each of the 3 screenings of “2016” that I’ve seen, Clint’s new movie (”The Trouble with Curves”) which he directed and stars in was a featured trailer. I agree with the many posters who believe the dottering fool approach was in the style of Jimmy Stewart. If you read the lines Clint delivered, they were absolutely devastating. Not even a fired up Mark Levin could have ripped apart the “mystique” of Dear Leader better than Clint did!

Clint’s apperarance, of course, was to help create in the popular culture legitimacy of Romney/Ryan/GOP claims that Obama is an historically failed president. On a night in which the main speakers (Rubio, Romney) took great pains to tell us what a great guy Obamugabe is and “it’s OK to make a change”, inserting Eastwood was truly brilliant. He said all the things that the main speakers couldn’t, given their strategy to appeal to the undecideds. Plus, the empty chair meme has already percolated into popular discourse and social media. Won’t be surprised to see empty chairs strategically placed at Romney/Ryan rallies for the next 2 months.

Moreover, this was the 1st time that I can recall in which Obama was truly ridiculed - and it was devastating - and it was in front of 40 million people! Let the left/MSM squeal. From now on, when people see an empty chair, they’re going to think of the Islamomarixist!

He should have debated an empty suit. It would have been more accurate.

Couldn’t agree more - I’m an independent - with one exception (2008 for Sarah) I’ve never given funds to any party. And I’ve never posted signs or other affiliations publicly. Today I put an old chair and a golf club in my yard. It’ll stay till my wife raises cane about how it makes the yard look bad ;)
