ok lets try this.....

With the orders granting the GWOTSM for “support duty”, the medal has essentially become almost the same type of award as the National Defense Service Medal and graduates of training schools, ROTC, and service academies are typically presented both awards at the same time. The primary difference between the NDSM and the GWOTSM is that the NDSM is automatic as soon as a person joins the military whereas the GWOTSM may only be presented after thirty days of duty (or three months in the case of the reserves). The regulations for reservists are also not as well defined for the GWOTSM as they are for the NDSM, since the presentation of the NDSM to reservists was codified and clarified as far back as the Gulf War.
Although the Marine Corps is under the auspices of the Navy, regulations for rating the GWOT are the same as those who serve on active duty. Essentially, 30 days of consecutive duty or 60 days of non-consecutive duty in support of approved organizations.[5]

Notice how it takes 4 assholes to disparage the Marines.

We called it the CNN medal, as in I watched Desert Storm on CNN and they gave me this medal.

When I actually went to SW Asia for the first time that somehow qualified me for two awards of the SW Asia Service Medal, even though I only went once. I didn't feel that bad about it because I had a friend in the Army that got a Bronze Star for succesfully getting his Company airlifted to Saudi Arabia 48 hours after the shooting stopped in Desert Storm.

Thanks. Now the whole “two” medal thing becomes clear. Again, thanks for the info.

I came to a very logical conclusion which would have prevented this horrible incident!

If we had only banned all supermarkets this would have never happened.

Criteria
It is awarded for honorable active military service as a member of the armed forces of the United States including the Coast Guard, between June 27, 1950 and July 27, 1954, (Korean War), between Jan. 1, 1961 and Aug. 14, 1974, (Vietnam War), between Aug. 2, 1990 to Nov. 30, 1995 (operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm), and currently from Sept. 11, 2001 to a date to be determined (terrorism attacks on the United States). Service members who earned the medal during the first qualifying period, and who again became entitled to the medal, wear a bronze star on the ribbon to denote the second award of the medal.

We are considered to be in a constant state of war since 9/11, so for recent folks, you are correct. We were considered to have been at peace during part of my lifetime.

I wonder if he went cold turkey off his meds. Brain chemistry is nothing to mess around with.

and only two years served?

My thoughts exactly..is not the Marines a four year tour? the Army draft was a two year program..but I think it is now a four year also..I could be wrong..I'm old..my husband was drafted in 1961 and he had a two year tour..19 months in Berlin, Germany during the Kennedy Administration.

so two years of military service today..did they discharge him other than honorable..was he a problem and they 'let him go'? could have been an anger problem..? will we ever know with today's MSM..

It’s 4 years minimum. See post #48 for details.

I’m guessing:

General Discharge

If a service member’s performance is satisfactory but the individual failed to meet all expectations of conduct for military members, the discharge is considered a general discharge. To receive a general discharge from the military there has to be some form of nonjudicial punishment to correct unacceptable military behavior. A general military discharge is a form of administrative discharge.

how can you be in the Marines for only 2 years? I thought it was 3 at least.

Probably got medically or administratively separated (i.e. kicked out).

"In the Navy we got them for guarding dumpsters and never losing one while in boot camp."

The National Defense ribbon and medal are awarded for serving during wartime. I was a combat engineer (cbt.). A local "police officer" (as titled instead of deputy here, in the middle of nowhere) heard that, raised his limp wrist, and asked, "Like Tim McVeigh?" He had a curly hair permanent and only weighed about 350 pounds or so.

I finished an pole-ice academy a long time ago, did all-night weekend patrols as a reserve in a corrupt city, alone, without pay for a few months then snitched to the Public Integrity Section of the Justice Dept. Quite a few gangsters were taken from their offices.

Looks like a problem child slipped through initial training without the drill sergeants (”drill instructors” in Marines?) checking well enough to make sure that his head was screwed on right. Maybe the Marines should go back to more of the old fashioned training methods banned for political feminists. I sincerely doubt that it was the fault of the drill instructors (very honorable men in both Marines and Army initial training that’s only for men-only combat specialties).
