In CBS interview, Romney abandons the Party of Lincoln

Thanks to one of my Facebook friends, I was just today alerted to the interview Romney gave CBS news on 8/27/2012. The video is here. In the interview, Romney says, "My position has been clear throughout this campaign. I'm in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest and the health and life of the mother."

The health of the mother exception is universally recognized by authentic pro-lifers as a loophole you can drive Roe v. Wade through. Then Romney makes the following statement, clearly putting an end to any notion that he is pro-life in any meaningful sense of the term:

"But recognize, this is the decision that will be made by the Supreme Court. The Democrats try and make this a political issue every four years, but this is a matter in the courts; it's been settled for some time in the courts...."

Translation: Pro-life is whatever the Supreme Court says it is. Romney's statement proves that with his nomination, the Republican Party effectively ceases to be the Party of Lincoln. Lincoln recognized that where a fundamental issue of unalienable rights is involved, no Supreme Court decision that fails to respect the principles of America's Declaration of Independence "settles the issue." By contrast, what we hear in Romney's interview is the slavish surrender of unchecked, unconstitutional, just plain tyrannical power to the federal courts. Did the Dred Scott decision in 1857 settle the issue of slavery? Not for Lincoln. No more can the present U.S. Supreme Court's pro-abortion jurisprudence settle the issue of abortion for us. In keeping with the Lincolnian heritage, the pro-life movement has been rooted in the Declaration's avowal of the Creator-endowed, equal, unalienable right to life. That's one of the things that made the Party of Lincoln its natural home.

But with Romney as its standard bearer, the GOP no longer upholds that avowal. To be sure, the GOP platform still makes cynical use of language drawn from America's Declaration heritage. But with his words, Romney rejects Lincoln's Declaration statesmanship; his articulation of the just cause of the Civil War; and his affirmation that the American people should never allow the Union to be dissolved on grounds that overthrow the indispensable principle of just self-government the Declaration articulates.

In this interview, Romney aims a death blow at the soul of the pro-life political cause. The timing of the interview was no accident. The evening before the vote that sealed his nomination as the GOP candidate for President, Romney makes a clear and emphatic statement nullifying the GOP's supposed platform commitment to the Declaration cause of the pro-life movement. So-called pro-life leaders and voters who back Romney cannot now deny that he stands openly within the political precincts of pro-abortion hell. As his supporters, they stand there with him. What we hear in Romney's CBS interview is the sound of the precincts' gates clanging shut behind them all. As I forewarned repeatedly: Romney's candidacy is a snare (Psalm 64:5), beware of falling into it.

I’m pro-life but I also don’t think a woman should be forced to carry a rapists child to term that was conceived at gunpoint. For most, that visit to the Emergency Room and the medication given will prevent the pregnancy in the earliest possible time frame.

You will NEVER get elected, so you are no use to the pro life cause.
Romney, however, will sign any piece of legislation that we can get through Congress.
Romney will stop the abortion and contraception mandate in Obamacare.
Romney will uphold conscience clauses.
Romney will oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.
Romney will support the “Mexico City Policy”

No, he is not perfect, but “Do not let the perfect be the enemy of the good”

YOU WILL NOT GET ANYTHING ACCOMPLISHED running as a 3rd Party spoiler, other than giving us 4 more years of Obama.

Look, we understand your argument, but we also know that it's full of holes and was concocted for no other purpose than giving you a toehold on what might pass for civilized beliefs and behavior in some societies.

So? The choice is between a Communist and a non-Communist candidate.

No one who vows to overturn Roe v. Wade will ever make it to the presidency....unless Muslims take over our government. That is the way it is in these latter days.

Just to clarify, EV is not a 3rd party candidate. He is a 10th or 20th party candidate.

Romney won't lift a finger to stop abortion ~ he's already said he is for unrestricted abortion.

In Massachusetts he participated in setting up the machinery to have it paid for by taxpayers.

Romney told you a story that had you believe what your mind wanted to believe. He's just a salesman and he made his sale ~ to you, but not to those who can still put 2 and 2 together.

The pro-lifers are wiling to put up with 4 more more years of abortion and euthanasia under Obama to gamble on 2016. That might be an ok argument for that one issue, but in the big picture it means sacrificing the economy as well.

A critical question needs to be asked of him: is abortion and its funding in federal or state authority?

The anti-abortion movement needs to be very clear that one of the important reasons Roe v. Wade was such an unmitigated disaster, was because the SCOTUS effectively “federalized” a state prerogative.

Since then, the anti-abortion movements biggest successes has been at the state level, gradually restoring abortion to state control, a win precisely because the vast majority of states are not pro-abortion.

However, the anti-abortion movements biggest losses are when the fight is at the federal level. Because then it can fall prey to whimsical justices and Democrat administrations.

Optimally, the very best result the anti-abortion movement can hope for is the SCOTUS to declare abortion and its funding to be out of the federal purview. In short order, the states would then generally limit it to just a handful of very blue states.

This would put the pro-abortion side at a severe disadvantage for several reasons, among which is that these very blue states are usually in deep financial crisis, so would be very stressed to subsidize abortion. And without subsidies, the price of abortion jumps.

Likewise, the anti-abortion movement could focus its money and energy on far fewer targets.

Agreed. Haven’t we moved past tossing up these anti Romney threads?

I mean the primaries are over. We’ve got great conservatives in many races across the country and a rock solid conservative VP pick. Sure, I get it that Romney isn’t perfect. But this past week he looked damn competent and like he’s going to be able to engineer a victory over Obama in November.

It isn’t as if Romney is running against some conservative pro life democrat. He’s running against our first socialist President. A socialist President who is fighting us on all fronts by letting immigrants flows across the borders, blocking any attempts at voter ID, tossing out food stamps to millions more families, regulating American small business out of existence and overall bankrupting the country.

The primary battles are over. Time to storm the Normandy beaches. We’ve got a great team of people to do it. Strap up people!
