TAMPA, Fla. Four years ago almost to the day, Sarah Palin became a megastar.
Overnight, she went from an obscure governor of a state 67 hours by car from the White House to the Republican Partys second in command, a power player who, very likely, could run for president in 2016 and win the nomination.
But on the eve of Rep. Paul Ryans nomination as Mitt Romneys running mate, Mrs. Palin was not in Tampa but instead on late-night Fox News, appearing from a remote location, perhaps her backyard in Scottsdale, Ariz., (which, if youre keeping track at home, is a 37-hour drive to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.).
Four years is a long time, so long its almost hard to remember her debut, her coming out. She was spectacular: off-white, side-button jacket, black pencil skirt, strand of pearls, low hair down, and of course the stylin glasses. The mainstream media mocked her for the line, Whats the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick, but her speech before 25,000 screaming supporters was substantive and succinct.
Sudden and relentless reform never sits well with entrenched interests and power brokers. Thats why true reform is so hard to achieve, she said, and, If character is the measure in this election, and hope the theme, and change the goal we share, then I ask you to join our cause.
Unlike Mr. Ryan, who has been a player for 14 years, having first won a Capitol Hill office when he was just 28, Mrs. Palin was the governor of Alaska but a neophyte in Washington ways when nominated. Of course, she was badly handled (and heavily over-handled) by the McCain campaign...

She sees the writing on the GOP's wall and it reads:
"GTFO Conservatives!"
Boehner, McConnell and their little lieutenants aren't going to cut it.
PALIN/RUBIO 2016!!!!!!!
I'm sure that's just hyperbole. She may be screechy, but hardly enough to make folks scream.
Marriage is between a man and a woman. Men marrying men and women marrying women is unnatural since the purpose of marriage is to procreate and pass on property within the family. Just because the state licenses marriages does not mean that the state owns marriage itself. To kneel before God a man and a woman can pledge fidelity and ask God's blessing on the marriage. The state does not even have to be present in a free society.
Politicians enact laws many of them bad. I will not obey a bad law. I will hold the politician and the bad law in contempt along with any court that tries to enforce it.
MEMO TO POLITICANS: If what I write and say and think forms a hate crime, come arrest me.
Well, the Beatles did, so did Elvis.
I’m not sure those are the best-drawn analogies. ;-)
>>While Ryan is a good pick for Romney, he is still GOP-E lite.
It’s a simple matter of weight ratios.
A RINOcerous can not ride Gym Rat - not even one gripped by the husk who was almost a professional skier.
Sarah is a puzzle wrapped in a conundrum. And its tragic that she didn’t run this time.
But I also think that this might boil down to she doesn’t want the job and doesn’t see herself in it. I hope that’s not the case. But I’m beginning to think that.
And there are also other political roles that she might want. Head of a reformed gop? Head of a second party? US Senate?
She could run in 2020, you mean.
If Romney looses this time there likely won't be a next time with any positive consequences.
Hell, I'm not convinced that there's going to be a 'next time' in 2012!
A third party would be suicidal.
We can't let the old boy's club/machine continue in it's codependency with the (more) "progressive" left.
And, it may already be too late anyway. (Take note Mr. Curl.)
The only way out is to vote for R&R in 2012 and push (don't just follow - shove) Sara and every untainted 'pubby and party outsider toward a coup within the party.
If we're real lucky, there just might be a maximum of four years to get it done.

Sarah Palin should either run for the House or go fishing for salmon again.
She could have run in 2010 but she did not have the fire in her belly and she chose to pursue other interests and make a few bucks.
American does not revolve around B-Hussein Obama (Junior) or Sarah Palin - the cult of personality and celebrity runs out of gas if you stay in the audience like Sarah Palin or you try to fake it like Obama has been doing.
She cannot compete against Ryan or Rubio and time marches on.
If you cannot do the job we have to let you go.....
Playing 3rd Party spoiler games will end any possible credible influence and turn her into a (I) Ross Perot, (R/L) Ron Paul, or (R/L) Gary Johnson.
You have to go eat at the little children’s table.

I think Sarah had intended to run this time...BTW, there was no presidential campaign for 2010..but when Perry entered, after stating he was not going to, I think she felt that he made that move to prevent her from doing it. Maybe you didn’t notice that she called him on it. Anyway, she gave it more consideration, but you have to realize that there were already 8-9 people in the race by then. Not a good time to enter the fray. I do think that she was looking for ways to keep in the public eye so that people don’t say once again, “Sarah Palin? Who is she?”
I wish she had run. I wish she’d begun a 3rd party ticket in 2010 because by now she’d have a huge following, especially after the messy primaries in the GOP. There are a LOT of us who are sick of what has become of the GOP. If Romney?Ryan go off track, then they are toast and will not get a 2nd term. I DO NOT want a democrat in the WH in the foreseeable future!
Good idea .... I’m off to the greasy spoon to “get me one”.
And take off with Karl Rove's bound-and-gagged base? Good way to get yourself and your family assassinated.
For years, Mr. Gingrich played the coy party leader, teasing conservatives as he toyed with the idea of running for president. He played the game in 2000, and again in 2008. But like Sarah Palin, he had no intention of running: Instead, he was busy making big bucks as an author and paid speaker ($50,000 a pop).
Mrs. Palin will play the same role as Mr. Gingrich once did: pushing the Republican Party to the right as she cashes in on books and speeches. Shell toy with a run in 2016 should the Republicans lose this November but pull back. By 2020, shell jump in and be crushed, just like Mr. Gingrich has been this cycle. And by then, therell be another conservative leader in the wings to take over her role. Same as it ever was.

And he wrote big Romney puff pieces like this one:
My current feeling is that the Tea Party needs to start raking in the big bucks to win the next primary. And they need to somehow have their own mini-primary-within-a-primary so that they can whittle down which candidate to put up with Tea Party backing before the real primary starts. I'm ideally for taking over the Republican party from within than going with a third party, because the former ought to be easier.
