Blast from the past: Dukakis to attack Romney’s gubernatorial record at DNC

Michael Dukakis fanatics at this year’s Democratic National Convention should start getting psyched: The 1988 Democratic presidential nominee is coming to town Tuesday.

“We will be flying down [to Charlotte] tomorrow morning and will be there for the balance of the convention talking about [former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt] Romney’s pathetic economic record as governor of Massachusetts,” Dukakis emailed The Daily Caller on Monday.

“Under Romney we were fourth from the bottom in job creation — 47th out of 50,” he continued. “If anybody thinks Romney knows how to turn the economy around, he is kidding himself. And when he left office, the state’s infrastructure was a wreck.”

A former Massachusetts governor himself, Dukakis said he does not have a speaking slot at the convention, but will be sitting on the convention floor with the Massachusetts delegation and doing a lot of press.

The Romney campaign hit back at Dukakis’ attacks in an email to TheDC.

CNNs Bernard Shaw: “Governor, if Kitty Dukakis were raped and murdered, would you favor an irrevocable death penalty for the killer?”

Dukakis immediately replied, “No, I don’t, and I think you know that I’ve opposed the death penalty during all of my life.” stoically, showing zero emotion.

Remember also that Dukakis had a 17 point lead against George H.W. Bush In the registered voter/likely voter polls before losing in one of America’s worst landslide defeats, for all of you FReepers who like to scare the crap out of yourself on a daily basis with all these polls where you’re about to drink hemlock because you think Romney/Ryan ought to be polling at 89% right now. Then election day came and it was absurdly clear that Dukakis never had a chance to win the White House.

Keep calm and carry on.

Yes! And Jimmah Carter will be serving Rabbit-Peanut pate.

Well, Dukakis was beaten fairly badly in the electoral vote, but GHWB won by a popular vote margin only 0.45% more than Obama in 2008.

So calling it one of the worst landslides ever would be a bit of a stretch. But it certainly was one of the biggest poll collapses ever.

Last I checked the electoral vote is what determines POTUS. Popular vote is not in line with our Republic and would undermine the very bedrock on which it is established. We are United “states”. each of which has a legitimate “vote” for POTUS. Popular vote would let populous liberal city centers... NY and LA... pick our President. The Electoral College protects States Rights.

Yes, and the EC is what determines who wins an election. So by any standard it was a landslide.

So funny. Let’s see if the “Fact Checkers” will come out and tell us that the unemployment rate was so low in the country at that time that even being #47 out of 50 states meant your state was doing well, basically. You’re correct, there isn’t much of a population left to employee when the rate gets so to a low level. Especially in small cities like Boston.

At 4-1/2% you’re basically at what economists think of as “full employment”, at least in a country with as many benefits for not working as ours.
