There is a lever here, if only the Republicans would seize upon its impact and use it as an example of how this policy of high fuel prices disproportionately affects every other single article of consumption.
Not only is the price of gasoline high, the Diesel fuel that powers the trucking industry is even higher, exceeding $4 almost everywhere already, and seems destined to rise to $5 per gallon or even higher in the near future.
And what hauls just about everything into your local retail stores? Trucks. Trucks that now have fuel costs of perhaps a dollar per mile, and that is paid for at only one place, at the checkout register.
