3 Coal-Powered W. V. Plants to Shut Down
WVVA,.com ^ | September 1, 2012 | Rachel Lucas

Three coal-fired power plants in West Virginia will soon stop generating electricity.

The last day of power generation for FirstEnergy Corp.'s plants in Albright, Rivesville and Willow Island was scheduled for Saturday.

FirstEnergy spokesman Mark Durbin said the plants would be deactivated by the end of the day.

Officials say some workers likely will remain on the job for a short period. They will deactivate the plants and take care of permits and environmental regulations. The plants employ a total 210 workers.

FirstEnergy also plans to close six coal-fired operations in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. The Ohio-based utility attributes the closures to new federal environmental regulations aimed at reducing emissions of mercury and other toxic pollution.

As of a year ago Germany was importing Appalachian coal from us. They know how to burn coal very cleanly and so do we. It is the eviro-commies who classify CO2 as a pollutant so are forcing us to shut down coal fired electric generation

When Mitt Romney gets in the first thing he must do is Operation Clean Sweep at the EPA. Broom out all the liberal slugs and half wit AA hires (all making $90,000/year minimum) who obstruct our economy

Obama Called for Bankrupting Coal Fired Power Plants

Obama Keeps Promise to Bankrupt Coal Power Plants

“If somebody wants to build a coal power plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.”

That was Barack Obama in 2008.

Today, the E.P.A. has issued new guidelines and standards for coal fired plants effective in in early 2012.

“From the start, his Energy Secretary [Steven] Chu called coal his ‘worst nightmare.’ Biden once said ‘no coal [plants here] in America.’ The president has had a hostile, aggressive stance against coal and now we’re seeing the impact on hardworking everyday Americans,” he added.

Same here. If I see that “Mitt hates women” ad one more time, I am going to punch my TV.

You are so right Mitt better switch them back on. If enough of these plants go offline you are going to start seeing rolling blackouts when the next summer hits and its going to be darned unpleasant without electricity. If the EPA has its way we will all be living like a third world country.

Yeah, but I bet those 6 blue counties make up most of WV voters.

Frankly, I think that the best thing utilities can do is de-commission these coal plants and replace them with rolling blackouts, particularly in blue areas where the environazis tend to congregate. Nothing teaches a lesson better then getting your own oxe gored by your own actions based on your own false beliefs.

They should. If energy companies weren't so stupid and would look at the long term picture instead.

When a plant shuts down they just import the energy from somewhere else and raise rates at few cents and go back to hoping the Liberals come for them last.

What they should do is black/brown out the rat infested cities. Let's see how enthusiastic these EPA bureaucrats and congress critters when the power goes out in DC, Phily, Baltimore, NYC around 3pm everyday and doesn't come back until late at night.

***Part of the runup in coal has to do with rail freight.***

At the coal plant I worked at (31 years) the rail cost of hauling coal was more than the cost of the coal in the car.

We used low sulfur coal, low ash and had electrostatic precipitators to clean the fly ash from the flue gas.

The exhaust gas had so little pollutants it was negligable. We had strip charts to prove it.

Now, the EPA has made new standards so tough the plant is debating whether to shut the plant down or add the new equipment (scrubbers for the LOW SULFUR coal)and a bag house to remove the .0099 % ash that does get out, along with anti-mercury and anti-lead equipment.

We all had to work shutdowns in the ash and no one ever had a mercury or lead poisoning problem. We did have one man die at a very old age of asbestos cancer.

If this plant was so bad why do we now have more deer than I’ve ever seen here, bald eagles winter here and bass are the largest in the cooling lake.

This plant also provides high dollar jobs for those employed at the plant, and help break the economic stranglehold of the CHICKEN men who wanted to keep this area agricultural so they could pay less than minimum wages.

Coal transportation is often five or six times the cost of the fob coal.

It is well established that coal releases mecury which is a toxix nerve agent, into the atmosphere. Sulphur Dioxide does exactly make life easy for farmers either.

Both of which can reduced to acceptable levels -- and are whenever the requirements call for it.

If the healthy limit is X parts per million, the only point in reducing emissions beyond that level is to vastly increase the cost.

The last thing in the world WV needs is some ignorant, arrogant prick in Germany telling them what they should do.

Shut them and others down. Coal is inferior to natural gas. If West Virginians want to keep digging for coal be my guest - but not on my dime!

GFY.

It's "your dime" forcing our electric power stations to shut down.

Ah, yes: The Simpsons.

Great comedy.

Bad science.

Try not to get the two confused.

Do you think those plants can be restarted on a whim?
If we are regulated to using one kind of energy, trouble will
follow since the RATs will then have us cornered and begin
the final regulated shut down of NG. Republicans will not save us,
they will allow it to protect themselves from the MSM by hiding under the bed.

Oh, and you want the power turned back on? Pay up to the Gov to save the planet.

F-n insanity.

“The shale gas revolution has lowered, tremendously, the price of natural gas in the US. As it will do any and every where else that people are allowed to drill for it. In the process this will close coal plants as they find that they cannot compete with the pricing of that natural gas.”
