Organic food 'not any healthier'

Eating organic food will not make you healthier, according to researchers at Stanford University, although it could cut your exposure to pesticides.

They looked at more than 200 studies of the content and associated health gains of organic and non-organic foods.

Overall, there was no discernable difference between the nutritional content, although the organic food was 30% less likely to contain pesticides.

Critics say the work is inconclusive and call for more studies.

The research, published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, looked at 17 studies comparing people who ate organic with those who did not and 223 studies that compared the levels of nutrients, bacteria, fungus or pesticides in various foods - including fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, milk and eggs.

None of the human studies ran for longer than two years, making conclusions about long-term outcomes impossible. And all of the available evidence was relatively weak and highly variable - which the authors say is unsurprising because of all the different variables, like weather and soil type, involved.

Fruit and vegetables contained similar amounts of vitamins, and milk the same amount of protein and fat - although a few studies suggested organic milk contained more omega-3.

Organic foods did contain more nitrogen, but the researchers say this is probably due to differences in fertiliser use and ripeness at harvest and is unlikely to provide any health benefit.

Well, duh! I eat organic when I can BECAUSE OF THE PESTICIDES residue. Only a moron doesn’t know the nutrient content is the same.

Just common sense. The “organic” food scam is as stupid and ignorant as the “man made global warming” scam! The only difference is in the dollar magnitude of the scammers on the scamees.

Organic food means that it was grown in animal crap.

Yum!

Exactly..also farmers in the area I grew up are spraying their fields with human poop/sewage from NY. They are supposed to wait several years or so before planting crops in that field but it sure does make everything grow really well...and I wonder if they are really waiting out the time period.

Farmers have been doing that for years..that will not hurt you in any way. See my other post on human sewage...that is something I would be concerned about.

You all seem pretty knowledgable about gardening...

We just purchased several fruit trees for a bargain. However, they seem rather leggy and misshapped. Can I prune them to get low branches on the trees? Call me an "urban gardener."

Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-based compounds, hydrocarbons, and their derivatives. Organic compounds virtually are the basis of all life, including the organisms that have long since composted into petroleum.

Crude oil is, like..."organic"...man!

And so are the derived plastics, drugs, petrochemicals, explosive material, and paints.

My wife’s friend buys only organic produce when she shops, and then she b*tches about how much stuff costs these days.

I just snicker when I hear her yapping about it and leave the room. I let my wife explain the facts of life to her for the umpteenth time, but since she supports Obama I can’t see as it will do any good this time either...

From the other 'organic' not healthier post.

Lol.

'Many of the studies didn't specify their standards for what constituted "organic" food - which can cost as much as twice what conventional food costs - the researchers wrote Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Oh.

'More than one-third of conventional produce had detectable pesticide residues, compared to seven percent of organic produce samples. And organic chicken and pork was 33 percent less likely to carry bacteria resistant to three or more antibiotics than conventionally-produced meat.'

Dear Texican:

I'm going to respectfully disagree on this one. MMGW is a huge scam, that can be proven and on that we definitely agree; however, my health has improved substantially since I switched to organic vegetables.

I always ate a relatively healthy diet. Lots of fruit, veggies, etc. I noticed a big difference in taste, quality, shelf-life, and my body's reaction to organics. Not ingesting as many pesticides was exactly what my body needed. I had the joints on my hands swell to the point of tearing the skin on my knuckles, chronic pain in my back, digestive problems, and more, all of which abated when I switched to organics.

GM vegetables have the pesticides infused into the seeds; you can't wash it off. Organics you can.

God made the food exactly the way He wanted it and our bodies needed it to survive. No modification is necessary.

You are welcome to disagree, and to not buy organics. I'm glad that they are working for you. Unfortunately, they did not work for me.

“although the organic food was 30% less likely to contain pesticides.” Organic with pesticides, I didn’t think it was allowed to be labeled as organic if it had pesticides.

If you want to find the real difference, someday they will do a comparison between store bought food (organic or otherwise) and food you’ve grown yourself. And be prepared for a SHOCK.

The problem with our food supply is that, pretty much unavoidably, it is grown a long way from where it is consumed. The only solution, organic or conventional, is to pick it early and let it ripen on the way. Sadly, some of the best nutrients and flavor gets into the food the last few days it is on the plant. Hence picked early means the cycle is stopped short.

We only have room for a small garden, but the taste difference between what we grow and what we buy is almost unbelievable.

My grandmother used to use some type of recycled sewage product to grow vibrant, beautiful roses. The bags of this stuff came with big red warning labels indicating it was NOT to be used to fertilize food grown for human consumption.

And what do you think soil contains?

If you knew, you'd probably stop eating.

I have used that fertilizer. I bought Mil-organite (poop from Milwakee sp?) and Hou-organite (local poop from Houston) It is good stuff but you need to remember to wash your hands.
