CU-Boulder faculty expresses fear over lifting of campus gun ban
Boulder Daily Camera ^ | Sept. 4, 2012 | Mitchell Byars

Citing concerns for their safety, University of Colorado faculty members were vocal Tuesday in their opposition of the Colorado Supreme Court's ruling earlier this year to overturn CU's campus gun ban

Chancellor Phil DiStefano, Provost Russell Moore, CU attorney John Sleeman and CU police Cmdr. Robert Axmacher were on hand at a town hall-style meeting Tuesday to try and address the concerns of faculty members, many of whom were deeply disturbed by the fact students could now carry weapons into their lecture halls.

"I don't want to be surrounded by someone who's armed," said Paul Levitt, an English professor at CU. Levitt said that part of teaching sometimes involves intense debate and disappointed students, and he didn't want the threat of armed students impacting the way he teaches his class.

"Some classes are taught aggressively; some are taught passively," he said. "My approach to teaching is to challenge the students, and they don't always take too kindly to that."

The state Supreme Court ruled in March that CU cannot ban concealed-carry permit holders from bringing guns onto campus.

One of the primary concerns from the faculty on Tuesday was that Colorado law protects the identify of people who have concealed-carry permits, making it impossible for professors to know which students may legally have a weapon in the classroom. Permit holders do not have to reveal if they have a permit unless asked by a law enforcement officer.

Several professors asked what they should do if they saw a weapon on a student but were unable to determine if it was permitted or not.

Axmacher said that a faculty member in that situation could call 911 and have police respond. But he warned that teachers need to be careful about how they handle those situations.

Well, that proves the worth of English classes at CU...

All joking aside, I think these liberal asshats are trying to imply that the students of said university cannot be trusted. They are simply bleating from on high in their ivory towers to the “unwashed masses” who are beneath them in station and sophistication.

Hahah...they’d sh*t themselves if they ever realized just how many folks were ALREADY carrying in their esteemed presence...

They LOVE law when it works in their favor... when it works in favor of us little people, well...not so much.

I’m lovin’ this one for sure...

Hope it keeps them up at night, wetting themselves.

They believe in the government and its agents having a monopoly on force, especially when they control the government.

100 million gun owners and counting say “we disagree...and no longer politely”.

F*** ‘em.

Sadly for them, the private sector has far more guns & ammo than our government.

Exercise your right, be prepared to be challenged on it, and be able to defend it.

Or you HAVE no rights.

If some Marxist wretch of a professor calls 911 and creates an incident where the Blue Brotherhood comes in guns blazing, he should be sued down to his last penny, and then sued again until even that penny is gone.

These cretins started this fight. We need to get in their faces, BE in their faces, and remain in their faces at every opportunity.

I think every student that carries and feels harassed or threatened by these pr*cks needs to let them know that there will be legal and civil repercussions should any of the faculty try to harass them in the course of exercising their right.

Any gunny lawyers out here willing to back up fellow gunnies pro bono, for the furtherance of “The Cause”?

There should be. There should be LEGIONS of legal scholars and lawyers on our side.

“...They only thing they are good at...”

Oh, they’re good at a number of things, brother...namely, effing up the country in as many ways as possible and ruining it for the greatest number of people possible.

They’ve been spot-on, bang-up, PERFECT at that...

Where’s the NRA on this? Have they come out publicly and stated that they will unequivocally support any student who is being harassed and threatened by these professors and staff?

How about every other firearms rights organization in the country banding together - a giant, frigging WALL of money and pissed-off, motivated, determined American Patriots - and standing behind every gun owner?

Might be letter-writing time to some well-placed folks in the NRA, GOA, JPFO and a host of others. Time to put all those donations and dues to REAL use.

Good idea, but phone calls might be more effective.

Withholding dues and membership money might be even more effective - until we see some results.

Forming Protective and Mutual Defensive Organizations for gun owners who are being harrassed might even be the best way to go. Hundreds of thousands of motivated folks sticking up for each other.

We’re an army...where’s all the organizers who know how to put this sh*t together and get it up and running?

If I was a radical professor, running aggressive communist brain washing classes in which I attempt to break down a person’s sexuality, personality, belief structure, morals and values, and replace them with the latest group-think political correctness, I would be afraid that the inmates may be armed, too.

In addition, leftists have promoted the notion that anyone who disagrees with them are racist, criminally insane individuals and this means conceal carry people are insane since radicals reject the second amendment. To them this means they will be surrounded with armed, insane people.

Too bad. Radicals push the limits of decent human interaction and deny people human dignity and independence of being. They are egotistical and cruel group-think mob leaders when in total control but naturally fearful when not in total control. That is why they fear and hate individual freedom.

If it enables one guy to "surround" you, professor, that firearm is a real force multiplier!

Of course. It would also restrain some of them from pushing the leftist envelope too far in the classrom.

sadly, i doubt theyd be interested in county/state/national defense funds/lawyers to fight for individuals...they would have to suffer the black eyes everytime a david koresh or george zimmerman gets his nutz in a vice, along with all the other guys who do uppity things like OC in 'legal' OC areas...

nra materials go straight to the trash, theyd finance a fund just in stationary/postage if they really wanted to, but then the *issue* is its own cash cow...

But you didn’t shoot your English professor because you asked yourself the questions: Is this a good idea ,is the professor worth the cost of the powder/brass/primer & lead ?

That is what separates you from the faculty of your college ,you ask questions that require you to think about what the consequences of your actions will be.
