Fact Check: First Lady's False Fairy Tale of Struggle

First Lady Michelle Obama’s pitch to voters last night relied on the premise that she and her husband understand what it is to struggle to make ends meet. She spoke movingly about their early years--about how a young Barack Obama drove a car that was “rusted out" and found his furniture “in a dumpster,” how they both came from families that had to “scrape by.” Her fairy tale--however well-delivered--was one great, big, colorful lie.

Both Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama began their adult lives with a leg up on the rest of America. They attended elite schools: Michelle went to Whitney Young, the public magnet school for Chicago’s upper class, while Barack attended Punahou, the private prep school for the top stratum of Hawaiian society. They were accepted to Ivy League schools despite undistinguished credentials, and both attended Harvard Law School.

Fact Check: First Lady's False Fairy Tale of Struggle
JMHO...she was employed in "Affirmative Action slot"...
she moved poor patients to "free" hospitals & "please look pretty/PR" Job in a Chi'town
Hospital while acting to secure more funding to her Employer from to IL gov't...not true?
..then, IF it's a vital position; why haven't they filled that vacant position?

This is an odd picture. Most wedding pictures have the bride and groom in the middle surrounded by family members.

reminds me of that old Monty Python skit “Four Yorkshire Men” with 3 or 4 guys sitting around trying to outdo each other and how hard their early lives were:

“Luxury? Well when I say our “house” it was only a hole in the ground covered by a piece of tarpolin, but it was a house to US.

GC: We were evicted from *our* hole in the ground; we had to go and live in a lake!

TG: You were lucky to have a LAKE! There were a hundred and sixty of us living in a small shoebox in the middle of the road...”

the skit went on and on as was the case with MP for many minutes..

Dear American Taxpayer,

For only the second time in my adult life, I am not ashamed of my country. I love being America’s First Lady.

I want to thank the hard working American people for paying for my many trips and vacations. I have been so busy with my food policing that I was only able to take one big trip a month. My daughter Sasha, several long-time family friends, my personal staff of 75 and various guests had a wonderful time in Spain.

Honestly, you just haven’t lived ‘til you’ve stayed in a private 3-story villa at a 5-Star luxury hotel, the Villa Padierna.

It only cost $95,000, and I was able to hold the total bill under $500,000.for the week. What a bargain!

Thank you also for the use of Air Force Two and the 70 Secret Service personnel who tagged along to be sure we were safe and cared for at all times.
Air Force Two (which costs $11,351 per hour to operate according to Government Accounting Office reports) only used 47,500 gallons of jet fuel for this trip and carbon emissions were a mere 1,031 tons of CO2.

That’s quite a carbon footprint as my good friend Al Gore would say, so we must ask the American citizens to drive smaller, more fuel efficient cars and drive less too, so we can lessen our combined carbon footprint.

But hey, Barack’s Air Force One costs about $200,000. per hour to operate and with his many trips, he spent almost half a billion dollars on flights alone last year. Yeah, that’s with a B… $500,000,000.
By the way, if you happen to be visiting the Costa del Sol,
I highly recommend the Buenaventura Plaza restaurant in Marbella; great lobster with rice and oysters!

I’m ashamed to admit the lobsters we ate in Martha’s Vineyard were not quite as tasty,
but what can you do if you’re not in Europe, you have to just grin and bear it.
I know times are hard and millions of you are struggling to put food on the table and trying to make ends meet.
So I do appreciate your sacrifices and do hope you find work soon.
I was really exhausted after Barack took our family on a luxury vacation in Maine a few weeks ago.
I just had to get away for a few days.

Cordially,
Michelle Obama

P.S. Thank you as well for the $2 BILLION dollar trip to India from which we just returned! P.SS. Thank you, too, for that vacation trip to Martha’s Vineyard - It was fabulous!
And thanks for that second smaller jet that took our dog Bo to Martha’s Vineyard so we and the children could have him with us while we were away from the White House for eleven days. P.SSS. Oh, I almost forgot to say thanks also for our two-week trip to Hawaii at Christmas.
That 7,000 square foot house was great and we could use the front door this time!

All this while Barack plays golf and campaigns to keep my trips coming for the next 4 years!

Thanks America!
But you owe it to me!
Love ya!
Remember, we all have to share the pain of these hard economic times equally!
We love to redistribute and share the wealth.

Both of them have lived a life of ease and privileged. They have no idea what it means to struggle. That the media allows them to spin this fable is sickening

READ the article, they did come from wealth. The claims of poverty are a campaign manufactured lie.

I heard very little of her “speech” but what I heard was so obviously a fairy tale. Like everything about the obamas, her bs must just need more clarification. Now to read the article...

Clarence Thomas brought himself up from dirt-poor rural poverty, and even he had an advantage that was worth more than money, namely, a set of grandparents who cared about him and his future.

Is that his mom next to him? She certainly gained weight in later years.

I will admit, that looks like a nice wedding gown. Michelle’s taste is usually so awful, I’m surprised.

All I could think of as I watched that were some quotes from Mamie Eisenhower about the time she and Ike visited Argentina, and observed that Evita Peron was just about the biggest phony to ever walk the planet.

Move over, Evita...
