CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Vice President Joe Biden has famously distilled President Barack Obama's argument for re-election to a simple phrase: "Osama Bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive." On Thursday evening, the scrappy former senator delighted Democrats gathered at their national convention in Charlotte with a long-form version of that slogan.
Speaking from his "ringside seat" to Obama's struggles since January 2009, Biden praised the president he has watched at work and told Americans worried about the still-sputtering economy that "America has turned the corner."
"Yes, the work of recovery is not yet complete, but we are on our way," said Biden. "The journey of hope is not yet finished, but we are on our way. The cause of change is not fully accomplished, but we are on our way. So I say to you tonight, with absolute confidence, America's best days are ahead of us, and, yes, we are on our way."
The speech was vintage Biden--peppered with "literally" (not always used correctly) as well as "folks," and leavened with snapshots from his working-class upbringing. And in classic Biden style, he drifted from his prepared remarks almost immediately.
The vice president roughed up Mitt Romney, suggesting that the former Massachusetts governor would have failed both the GM and the bin Laden tests (though it's worth noting that Biden himself has said he opposed the bin Laden raid).

and so are you, Joe. Start packing.
"Osama Bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive."
Wow! After this many gaffes, the MSM still describe Biden as “scrappy” instead of “a joke” or “pathetic”. I will never forget how despicable they were toward Sarah Palin.
Is the Joe who promised recovery summer?
Wait until the jobs numbers hit tomorrow.
Biden, you are on the way out!
Ding! Ding!
The train will leave the station with the end of the Obama Regime around the corner.
Help is on the way! That was Senator John F’n Longface (who served in VietNam) Kerry’s sorry-ass slogan in the 2004 campaign
Osama Bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive.”
We can thank the Navy Seals for Osama
The Chinese who got the jobs that GM closed in America thank General Motors.
So why would we vote for Obama again???
And it only took a 1/3 increase in the national debt in 4 years to make ever single economic measurement for average Americans worse then it was when 0bama took office,.
"America has turned the corner."
It's the Summer Fall Winter Spring Summer Fall Winter Spring Summer Fall Winter Spring Of Recovery!!!
we are on our way.
We’re circling the drain! Going, going, gone.
Got that right. You or I could have killed osama with Seal Team Six behind us. And GM is now building a new plant in Mexico. Still waiting for my $53 a share to break even.
I don’t understand why commentators are saying it was a great speech.
The only thing I can think of is that perhaps the expectations for the gaffe-prone Biden were so low.
It was filled with the usual oleaginous platitudes and straw men that political speechwriters typically fill such speeches with. Yes, Biden used the teleprompter well and made an effective delivery.
But the part of the speech when he went on at length about the “courage” of Obama in giving the order to get bin Laden was downright offensive. Obama didn’t risk a hair on his head. SEALs can get killed just in training. And we know from Richard Miniter’s book that Obama and Jarrett had to be dragged kicking and screaming to give the go-ahead for the mission. That part of Biden’s speech was just disgusting.
FedEx, UPS, all the trucking companies and all the rails indicate that Biden is full of caca. Everything is going in the wrong direction, just like this administration.
