"Please don't feed the animals."
That phrase makes sense when talking about bears and deer, turkeys and elk in the Great Smoky Mountains.
It's quite another matter when discussing whether to give food to human beings who need help because circumstances have left them wanting for one the most basic of aspects of life.
That is unless you are David Fowler, president of the Family Action Council of Tennessee — ironic, that name.
Fowler, a former Tennessee state legislator, posted on his personal Facebook page recently that the National Park Service's "stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves," Fowler wrote in the post. "This ends today's lesson."
Fowler apparently thinks that the 1,341,520 Tennesseans who received food stamps in July, the last month for which statistics are available, are less than human.
He says that's not what he meant. That what he meant was that "Government creating human dependence on government demeans human dignity and is antithetical to human freedom government is intended to protect."

Food stamps are a necessity for many people and I am glad that we have the program for those truly in need. I live in a poor area where I know many families would go hungry without them. That being said, I am tired of 20yr old single mothers buying 12 packs of coke and Haggen Daas ice cream bars at 7-11 using food stamps. Drives me nuts.
One can eat reasonably well on just 25 minutes of minimum wage labor per day. See tagline.

Taxpayers are getting pinched (and criticized) so they have to make sacrifices so that the takers can live “higher” than the “givers”.... at gunpoint.

Everyone likes to feel good about themselves. Giving to others makes one feel good. It is charitable.
Being forced by Government to ‘give’ is like being held up by a street thug. It is theft. That does not feel good, you feel violated
In Cal. a card, similar to a debit card is given. Liquor stores advertise that they accept these cards. They were being used in casinos and on cruise ships. The author said the program she refers to is only good for 3 years she fails to say that after the 3 years they can reapply. Now that 47% of people receive some type of Gov. assistance it is time to revamp or eliminate these programs.
"I'll give you an extra $20 in Food Stamps if you'll give me cash". When I declined, she moved onto the next in line. I wish I had thought to ask her what her son would be eating during the coming week.
Seems there is an abundance of Food Stamps floating around which can be used to barter for drug money.

In my area, they use EBT Cards to buy multiple shopping carts full of bags of potato chips, cookies, packages of lobster, ice cream, candy, soft drinks, and then get someone else to buy their liquor/cigs for cash, in a dollar-for-dollar exchange for using the EBT Card to buy them food. What a scam. I called the City Welfare Office to report it, and was told they don’t give a crap. Don’t call us again. Still PMO when I see it happening.
The author is being deliberately misleading when citing the three-year limit. Someone in the comments said the three-year limit only applies to someone without dependents.

I disagree a bit that by teaching a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime - He feeds himself for a lifetime, which is even better (for both of you).
You also left off the new, last part:

Pepsi, Coke, Cheetos and Oreos ads are ultimately paid for with food stamps.

A friend, a single mother, lost her job when the store she worked at closed. The ex is a dead beat, so unemployed with a child to feed, she applied for food stamps. At the initial interview, she asked what happened when she got a new job. How did she go about removing herself from the food stamp program. The interviewer looked at her like she was from another planet. Why on earth would she want to get off food stamps? Obviously he had never been asked that question before.

Because of our Christian heritage, Americans are a charitable people. Unfortunately, there are folks that have exploited that kindness. That “safety net” has now become a hammock for far too many.
How many of the millions living off of taxpayers are willing to actually get a job and work? I know in my life during rough times I have taken some pretty lowly jobs to survive - delivering phone books, mowing lawns, washing dishes, retail sales and a few others that weren’t so glamorous. The last thing I wanted was to be a burden to someone else.
There is a place for charity - the very young, disabled, or very old may need help. And in an ideal world, the churches, communities and families would take care of those that truly need it, and there would be no need for government theft and handouts. I’m already a giver. If my taxes were cut in half, that would only increase.
There are always jobs and opportunities for those that truly want to work. And if we could ever shrink the government and lower taxes, there would be even more available.

No government program, including Food Stamps, is a necessity.
Charity for the truly hungry and needy is a necessity for any civilized society.
The two are not the same. The former is designed to stifle the latter.
