Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson vows that a check-off box asking voters to confirm their U.S. citizenship will once again appear on November ballot applications, raising concerns among voting rights advocates who argue it's unnecessary, intimidating and could suppress voting.
(snip)
"Johnson added the citizenship checkbox to ensure that only U.S. citizens participate in Michigan elections," [Sec. of State Department spokesman Fred] Woodhams said. "It also helps noncitizens who have inadvertently registered to vote by letting them know that it is not proper for them to vote."

The only voting it could suppress are non-citizens. The democrat party that is always whining and complaining about the unfairness of people actually being rich have no problem with non-citizens taking their jobs and milking the system that could provide the free loading systems of free stuff.
They really are that stupid.
as if it would be hard for an illegal to check a box
lol.
We wouldn’t offend their guilty conciousness just as they are about to comit a felony, that is so rude.
I don't do recreational drugs so I wish they would have explained this better. Being asked if you are a U.S. citizen is "intimidating" and could "suppress" your desire to vote? What the...
I didn’t promise that the arguments of the demonicrats would make any sense, did I?
You have to understand. The check box isn’t on the ballot. Its on the registry with your name and address. If you illegally vote, you’ve basically reported yourself to the state. The poll worker is on the hook too if you check that you aren’t a citizen and they still allow you to vote.

Ruth Johnson knew what she was up against when she ran for the office and this ad was very effective. In fact it should be a model for other republican SOS candidates.

You might want to put that in Spanish.. Just sayin’

Well butter my butt and call me a muffin!!! We are going to have a check box to verify citizenship??? What a concept! This will definitely suppress the non-citizens from voting. Weren’t their non-citizens that voted in Florida and the excuse they used was, ‘I didn’t know I couldn’t vote’?
If you illegally vote, youve basically reported yourself to the state.
FWIW - For an alien knowingly to make a false declaration of US citizenship makes him/her deportable - no matter what mitigating circumstances are - and that person may not be admitted back into the US. No exceptions. (That’s the law - I don’t know whether and how efficiently the law is enforced).
We in Michigan are also asked to show a photo ID before being allowed to vote. A practice deemed by the Obama Justice Department as discrimatory in the Voter’s Rights Act of 1965 supervised state of Texas.
Bingo. That’s what neither side is saying. If an illegal alien checks the box that says they are a citizen, they have committed criminal fraud.
If they don’t check the box, their ballot could be considered incomplete, and thus, void. So don’t even try to boycott it.
In just a few years, we’re going from some of the dirtiest elections in the nation to the cleanest.
Ruth Johnson has been leading this charge for quite a while. She was the one who raised the alarm about some 30,000 fraudulent voter registrations in Oakland county when she was a county commissioner back in 08. Then there was the fake tea party scam in 2010.
Inadvertently registered to vote??
I have written a few crazy/weird humor short stories, but I would never have thought of anything THAT nonsensical!
The poll worker is also required to inform the voter to check the citizenship status box so they also have legal responsibility. Obviously if the voter lies, you can’t nail the poll worker for it but if they check non citizen and are still allowed to vote the poll worker is admitting guilt.
Johnson checkmated the left.
