The Canadian Auto Workers union is turning up the pressure in contract talks with the Detroit Three auto makers, saying it is prepared to go on strike against all of them at the same time if no deal is reached by the Sept. 17 deadline.
“The corporations are refusing to add any costs whatsoever – instead they insist on cutting costs from our existing agreements,” the CAW said in a leaflet distributed Wednesday at Canadian plants operated by Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. “None of the three companies have demonstrated that they are serious about reaching an agreement.”
The common message from the companies is that anything that increases wages or costs – such as signing bonuses – must be offset by cost reductions in other parts of the agreement, the leaflet said, adding that the positions taken by the companies show a “co-ordinated effort” to hold the line.

Really, really bad time for any union to be striking before the election, especially one that could significantly impact the national economy. Not going to help The One at all. Economy goes further in the crapper, and the folks see once again how union power isn’t necessarily a good thing.
If I were the head of a large corporation being struck right now, I’d do everything possible to keep the strike going right until after election day, and I would seek as much national publicity as possible pointing out how my company was on the verge of failing and the strike might just finish it off, significantly adding to the unemployment situation.
I don’t know any specifics about Saturn, but my feeling is that is was as multisourced as any car in history. The OEM (GM in this case) keeps the specifications for the components and probably has at least three suppliers for any assembly they don’t make in house.
For any relatively popular brand, there are dozens of after market suppliers. You can still buy newly manufactured Model-T parts.
Ah, my old hometown of Kanukistan...my money is on the Big 3 folding to these cretins. Unions in Kanada are stronger than American ones.
Then again, canada post (post office) did not get their concessions on their last strike once the public found out what a bunch of dead beats they were (just like American USPS workers).
So they are striking for more inflated worthless Obama dollars. Little do they understand money is being devalued faster then a raise will cover.
The Unions goal is to take out Harper.

Having said that, the unions here are really being unbelievable. They say that they gave up SO much when the companies were hurting, and now that the companies (GM) are doing SO well, they want payback. Incredible. They will be watching their jobs go south, or abroad.
Go ahead and strike. Nothing but a bunch of grossly overpaid lazy slobs doing repetetive monkey skills.

I wonder what’s cheaper... dealing with the Canadian unions or making a new plant in a business-friendly US state. Technically, the US labor board wouldn’t have a dog in the fight since it doesn’t involve a US union.
Of course, I’d only suggest this if Obama gets unelected. The man has no concept of the boundaries on his power and would rather fight for a foreign union than American workers.
