Why Men Will Never Fully Recover From The Great Recession

Ashley Lutz
Sep. 8, 2012, 9:46 PM

The recession affected men's careers the most, and the workplace will never be the same.

But men will never fully recover because the bad economy simply expedited something that had been happening for years, according to Hanna Rosin's new book The End of Men: And the Rise of Women.

Rosin explains in her book:

In the Great Recession, three-quarters of the 7.5 million jobs were lost by men. The worst-hit industries were overwhelmingly male and deeply identified with macho: contruction, manufacturing, high finance. Some of these jobs have come back, but the dislocation is neither random nor temporary. The recession merely revealed--and accelerated--a profound economic shift that has been going on for at least 30 years, and in some respects even longer."

The movement from a manufacturing economy to a knowledge-based one is what's really at work, Rosin said.

"The manufacturing economy will never operate how it used to, and men are accustomed to operating in a very narrow space," Rosin said in an interview. "The quality the workplace most values right now, flexibility, is something that women have, and men need to catch up to succeed."

The August jobs report revealed men's participation in the workforce to be at the lowest level since 1948, the Atlantic reported. The number of men in the workplace began declining in the 1950s, when women entered the workforce in droves.

“God help their future husbands.”

That's their problem - they ain't getting husbands. Or I should say, they ain't getting MEN. Like you said, the new castrati is about the best they can hope for.

“I would say a lot of male American conservative would pass on these type of women...”

For playthings, they have a use. For marriage or motherhood, nope.

“Of course their are a few out there also a minority.”

I completely agree. It's sad what's happened to this country.

Is your g/f a conservative,my wife is?
The reason i ask is my male tenant is a conservative while his g/f is a bleeding heart liberal,he says to me we rarely talk politics so it is not an issue..
When i explained it as a way of looking at life and how we live it as a lib or a conservative and it extends way outside of politics.
I swear man you could see the light bulb going on in his head,he started thinking about what they argue over and instantly seen his conservative view up against her lib view.
He sat in the mancave for the next hour mulling over stuff and every so often he would go “ahh that explains”...I said dude you are gonna have to convert her or you will always be arguing over stuff...

My g/f is pretty nonpolitical - she pretty much HATES ALL politicians. Can't really say I blame her (living in MA and all).

A mixed relation like you described is pretty much doomed to fail...you know it too. Outside of possibly great makeup sex, there's nothing there because you have two people with disparate viewpoints of the world.

What’s sad is John Lennon actually believed in the “peace, love and colors” bullsh*t...and got blown away.

I’ve actually watched the movie “Imagine: John Lennon” and felt very sad, because you know how it ends.

This still gets me:

The Beatles are still my favorite band (McCartney’s asinine anti-Bush comments nonwithstanding).

“...I wonder if a recalibration is in store...”

If history has proven anything, it’s that there is ALWAYS a “recalibration”, eventually, and usually with catastrophic results for those who started the BS in the first place.

It’s never a good idea to try and strip a motivated, determined “class” or group of people of their rights, their culture, and their dignity and then repeatedly rub their faces in it.

To: GOPsterinMA; crosshairs; JW1949; DarthVader; fieldmarshaldj; Impy; Gilbo_3; DoughtyOne; ...

I’ve spent the last 11 years coaching township Baseball to be able to have some say in reversing this crap. My son has been part of organized sports since he was able to hold a bat, a glove, and catch a ball.

Every one of us out can try to volunteer some time for this. It helps. Especially when you hear what some of these kids are exposed to, and you step in to correct misconceptions and intentional misinformation. Outright Ridicule of what the other side preaches works real well with the kids too - some parents even THANK you for “saying what needs to be said”.

And believe me, I’ve had some parents get pissed and pull their kids out (not many), but those kids STILL got to hear a different viewpoint and what they’ll remember is their parents pulling them off the Team and away from their friends, and how the other parents DIDN’T react that way.

The other side can indoctrinate. But we can TEACH - how to be young men, how to be Citizens, how to be Americans.

All it takes is the Will to get in the arena and do it.

After all - that’s how the other side got this far to begin with.

Volunteer. Coach. Teach. Be a mentor. Team up with other Dads that are on the same page.

Get your gunny friends together, organize a Youth Day At The Range at your local range. Kids today know more about guns from “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” games than we ever knew when we were growing up. They’re waiting for the opportunity to be able to shoot the real thing and be taught properly.

Give them the opportunity.

Every one we take away from the other side is one less potential future liberal. I’ve already taken my son and his friends shooting with some of the guys I shoot with. This is how you can be proactive. The kids loved it, and learned that “Hey...guns aren’t evil... they’re FUN, and I can own them when I’m old enough!!!”

If we don’t get involved, get active, and influence the kids, we can kiss the society we love goodbye.

If we do nothing, the other side wins by default. We DO have a say in that outcome.

I choose to NOT let them win, by doing whatever small part I can, and by playing whatever small role God set before me. I’ll do this until the end of me.

Edward Everett Hale said “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”

Just do the one thing you CAN do - whatever it is.

Millions of “ones” add up to multiple millions of future Americans.

Thanks brother.

We either stand the hell up, or we lay down, roll over and kiss it all goodbye.

For the record, the latter is NOT an option.

I’d rather make the other side pee themselves, every day, every night, every minute of every day by any and every means necessary.

The one thing I can do...is not the ONLY thing I can do...so I do ALL that I can do.

Thanks, brother.

“...hate any and all RATS...”

I’ve also learned that some folks on that side truly have no idea what’s been done to “their” party. When they hear a different viewpoint, by someone they respect (kid’s coach, for example) that opens dialogue.

And when you wake them up, the other side loses even more folks.

The hardcore apparatchniki, however; well, yeah, they need to be shut down any and every way. But they’re actually a small majority.

You just need to educate folks...like anything else, some will get it, some won’t. So don’t waste anymore time, effort, or breath on those that refuse to get it.

Concentrate on and exploit the breaches, rather than going headlong at the blockhouses.
