PPP: Obama leads by 5 in Ohio (50-45)
PPP ^ | 09/09/2012

PPP's first post-conventions poll in Ohio finds Barack Obama with a 5 point lead over Mitt Romney, 50-45. This is the largest lead PPP has found for Obama in an Ohio poll since early May. Last month Obama led 48-45.

Both candidates have seen their images improve with Ohio voters in the wake of the conventions. Obama now breaks even in his approval rating at 48%, after being under water with 46% of voters approving and 51% disapproving of him a month ago. Romney's numbers are up from a 41/52 favorability rating a month ago as well, but he still remains unpopular. Only 44% see him favorably to 49% with a negative opinion.

Romney actually leads 46-44 with independents but Obama has the overall advantage thanks to a more unified party base. He leads 86/11 with Democrats, compared to Romney's 83/13 advantage with Republicans. Obama's 75 point lead within his own party is up from 70 points a month ago, suggesting that his party has coalesced around him a little bit more in the wake of a successful convention. By a 47/35 margin Ohio voters say they think the Democrats had a better convention than the Republicans.

Obama's leading in Ohio because he's not as weak there with some large voter blocs as he is in other states. He trails only 48-46 with men and 50-46 with whites, and actually leads 49-47 with seniors. His performance with those groups is far better than it is nationally- Romney would need much wider leads with them if he was going to take Ohio.

Despite chatter that Obama's convention speech was not up to his normal standards Ohio voters still say by a 60-31 margin that Obama gives better speeches than Romney. His position in the state may also be helped by the fact that the folks who gave the major convention speeches Tuesday night are more popular than he is: Bill Clinton has a 57/34 favorability rating and Michelle Obama's is 57/35. Romney's wife is an asset for him too- 54% of voters see Ann Romney favorably with 28% holding an unfavorable opinion. But Mrs. Obama wins out in the more popular wife category by a 49/41 margin. Out of the other Democrats who gave primetime speeches last week Julian Castro made the most positive impression and has a 28/17 favorability rating. Voters are split on Elizabeth Warren at 23/23 and Martin O'Malley doesn't seem to have attracted much attention with 86% of Ohioans saying they have no opinion about him one way or the other.

It's hard to see a path to victory for Mitt Romney without Ohio, and Obama continues to be in a strong position there with eight weeks to go.

Obama’s blitzkrieg of ads in May/June/July did not give him a large
lead

but it made Romney make his convention an Oprah-fest

This wasted time that should have been to highlight Romney’s strength:
business, economics, taxes, growth, policies.

Not to make Romney “likeable”

Oh well.

Now Romney is “likeable” but he does not have competence
or freedom loving as his calling card

NO HERM CAIN, NO MICHELE BACHMANN, NO LOUIS GOHMERT

no Tea Party activists at the convention

They even shut out Ron Paul

Why you shut out Ron Paul activists, your own base I will never know
but Planned Parenthood, NARAL, were given speaking slots.

Hey, that’s great news!

Hopefully the people of Ohio, not to mention America, are utterly stupid enough to re-elect The Destroyer and seal their fate, because they most certainly deserve it.

This election shouldn’t be even remotely close, and the fact that it is makes me disgusted at my country.

Utterly dizgusted.

Another BS democrat-dominated poll. Move along. Nothing to see here.

If you are a Democrat, press 1. If a Republican,
press 2. If you are an independent or identify
with another party, press 3.
Democrat ........................................................ 41%
Republican...................................................... 37%
Independent/Other.......................................... 22%

This should motivate the R/R team to work harder, put Romney’s name in the news more often.

Does it say if it’s likely or registered voters? This smells of registered voters. Anytime that Obama has had 50% in any poll, it’s registered voters.

Likely voters - but no breakdown as to ‘rats vs ‘pubs - ask about favorability of Martin O’Malley and Julian Castro - but nothing about Republicans such as Marco Rubio or Mia Love - biased indeed.....

The Dem +4 thing is not unreasonable. The split in the moderate contingent is really bizarre. 3-1 in favor of the Democratic positions on issues, that just does not fit what one would expect from the moderate segment of the electorate (unless numerous liberals are just so ashamed of the label that they delcare themselves “moderates”).

But the most astounding thing in this poll was “who is more responsible for bin Laden’s death - Obama or Romney?” If it was “Obama or Bush”, that would be a legit question. Nobody is claiming that Romney had a role in bin Laden’s death. It’s almost like a push poll question to make Obama look better than Romney in the eyes of the people being polled.

Everyone has been saying it was going to show a 9 point lead all day in a panic. He makes it to 50 post convention bounce, which will not last - 5 is probably not even outside the margin of error.

Poll: Advantage Kerry in Ohio Race (Kerry 50%, Bush 47%)

If PPP has it 50-45, then you can bet the actual numbers are 47-48 or near that.

PPP is a outfit for daily kos and it has been to taken with a grain of salt.

I looked and I can’t find the voter break down. Given tat it is a PPP, they probably over sampled dems by several points.

Agreed. Time to bring in Kascish and Santorum for a full-throttle campaign. The RNC and The Romney camp are asleep at the switch. Kerry would have been President (and John Edwards VP) had he garnered an extra couple of thousand votes in OH. OH is is MUST win or game over.
