Sometimes life in a homeless shelter is more than a 14-year-old can handle. Francheska Luciano, who is among a growing number of homeless children in the city, said living in a shelter was “like living in hell.” “I’m tired of this,” she said Friday while sitting on a curb outside a shelter intake center in the Bronx with her mother and little sisters. “It’s a nightmare every day.” The number of children in the city’s shelters hit 19,000 last week, the most recent city data available show. “Not since the grim days of the Great Depression has New York City had 20,000 children sleeping homeless each night,” said Patrick Markee, senior policy analyst with the Coalition for the Homeless. Francheska’s family was waiting outside a Department of Homeless Services intake center surrounded by suitcases containing all their belongings. “It’s really hard on my sisters; they’re young, they have no childhood, they don’t sleep well. It’s not fair to them,” Francheska said of Shanely, 7, Yadeiliz, 4, and Mileishka, 2.

And back in the ‘80’s when homeless shelter numbers were high (so they said) the leftists went ballistic about Reagan’s policies.
These creeps are nothing but liars. Anyone who thinks that Communism was defeated with the fall of the Berlin wall, the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the eastern bloc countries only needs to visit the USA and familiarize him/herself with the modern day Democrat party. Anyone familiar with Obama’s personal and family background will understand that Communism is not dead. It now calls itself the Democrat party.
Funny how in a Democrat administration, the homeless typically disappear from the news pages, only to reappear in a Republican administration, no matter what the economy looks like.
The strangest thing is that NYC is a place with a very high cost of living; I couldn’t imagine traveling to some expensive LA suburb (far beyond my means) and simply turning myself in to a shelter because I can’t afford to live there.
Outside of a roaring black-market economy, I’m not sure what (besides massive “social programs”) would motivate anyone to move to NYC. Many of them are there for the “sanctuary city” reasons (they are illegals - not paying taxes but draining resources); without infusions of them NYC would be undergoing “Detroitification”.

I’m not understanding why so many are homeless. What about all the public programs and assistance? Better yet, what happened to family members?
I read somewhere that a woman who moves into a homeless shelter with her kids is put on a fast track to public housing. Instead of living with mom for five years waiting for her own place, she gets it in a month or two after living in the shelter.

Some interesting stats to wade through and use.
In the late 70’s a company I worked for used day labor companies for extra workers needed for the day. We called them “rent a wino”.
One guy was in his 30’s and had never been outside of Houston's downtown in his entire life. He had never even gone past the 610 loop to find out what was on the other side. He was born to bums who themselves had been born to bums.
He actually thought the entire world looked like downtown Houston. He had never seen open space without buildings in his entire life.
When he saw what Houston looked like from a distance he went absolutely nuts and they had to take him back to the shop.
I feel for the homeless. A few years ago we were at our dentist’s office in Bryan, Texas. Accross the street people were line up at a food pantry. We walked over and wrote them a check. Today we got a letter saying they have had an increased demand for food but a decrease in donations. It was a plea to give whatever we can afford.
This is going to get worse.
What I meant by the “sanctuary city” bit was that many of these people (including the children) probably weren’t even born in this country; they’ve seen more of the world than I have!
