Paul Ryan on Chicago teachers strike: ‘We stand with Rahm Emanuel’
Yahoo! News ^ | Sept. 10, 2012 | Chris Moody

Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan spoke out against the Chicago Teachers Union strike on Monday, saying he stands behind Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's opposition to the demonstration.

"Mayor Emanuel is right today in saying that this teacher's union strike is unnecessary and wrong," Ryan said in Portland, Ore., according to a pool report transcript. "We know that Rahm is not going to support our campaign, but on this issue and this day we stand with Mayor Rahm Emanuel."

More than 26,000 education professionals in the Chicago area did not attend work on Monday over a contract negotiation dispute with the Chicago Board of Education.

President Barack Obama's administration declined to comment on the strike. Emanuel, elected mayor in 2011, was Obama's chief of staff from 2009 to 2010.

Here are Ryan's full remarks:

If you turned on the TV this morning or sometime today, you probably saw something about the Chicago teacher's union strike. I'd like to make a couple of comments about that because it does matter. I've known Rahm Emanuel for years. He's a former colleague of mine. Rahm and I have not agreed on every issue or on a lot of issues, but Mayor Emanuel is right today in saying that this teacher's union strike is unnecessary and wrong. We know that Rahm is not going to support our campaign, but on this issue and this day we stand with Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

When you hold the schools and the classrooms hostage it’s called “collective” bargaining.

“We stand with Rahm Emmanuel” is the last thing I want to hear from someone who is supposed to be on my side.

The Chicago teachers have joined the OWS. Let them stay out until after the election. Maybe they can camp with the OWS protesters. Most of those protesters look more like SEIU members than members of the teachers’ union anyway.

One sign that a teacher was holding in the CNN picture said, “Support Students, not Bankers!” If that doesn’t sound like OWS, I don’t know what does.

At least he didn’t say he stands behind Rahm Emmanuel.

"We know that Rahm is not going to support our campaign, but on this issue and this day we stand with Mayor Rahm Emanuel."

A master stroke by the next Vice President of the United States. We must be vigilant, though, to be sure that the ENTIRE sentence is quoted in the LSM, not just the part after the word "BUT".

I’m liking Ryan a lot. He’s making it much easier to vote in November for me.

I think it’s brilliant. He takes the side of Rahm’s hard-ass “poseur”ism, getting onboard while Obama is still pretending to be neutral, and forcing Rahm to hold the line on his initial “faux” stance.

how?
This is Illinois.
Obama will look like a jerk, for siding with a union that walked out on kids and turned down a 16% pay increase offer.

There is no way for this to benefit Obama.

You are here to cause trouble among conservatives.

Nobody pays much attention to what you want to hear.

Ryan was right, I loved what Ryan said.

Everyone (with a brain) knows the Union is “pretending” to strike and Rahm is “pretending” to oppose them and that Obama is “pretending “ to be neutral and plans to sweep in and broker a deal just as fake as his pizza pickup encounter. I think it’s real smart for Romney to oppose the union and Ryan to back Rahm so that Obama looks like the union goon as soon as he opens his lying mouth.

I hope you're right but I smell a rat. Here's a possible scenario:

Union organizes phony threat to strike. They set their demands way above any possibility that they will be successful. The Leftist MSM feigns worry and concern. A regular "woe is me" feast.

Obama comes to the rescue with a plan that satisfies the Unions and the Mayor. Dancing in the streets of Chicago, New York, Atlanta (CNN), Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Washington DC.

Obama gets another phony 5 point bounce in the polls. Whata guy. What talent. Pure genius.

Sad thing is, if Obama sides with Rahm, the media will say its courageous and the union will still vote for Obama.

Obama now has to intervene and against the teachers union.

Just read a transcript of Rush, with an angle that I hadn't thought of.

If you were scripting this for an Obama miracle, what would you do differently?

Nothing.

A few days of hand-wringing on the news, and Barry-O sweeps in, has a beer summit, gets the union to agree to 3.5%, not 4, and everybody wins, and who's the hero?

It still neutralizes any benefit Obama would have gotten from brokering a deal and the union loses. Win-win. They messed up when they had Rahm pretend to oppose the union so strenuously. He should have stayed out of it. Then Obama could have still rode in and saved the day. Now if gets a deal done he appears to be against Rahm, Ryan, AND Romney and for the union.
