Trump: If Republicans 'don't get tough, they're not going to win this election'
The Hill ^ | 09/10/12 | Justin Sink

Posted on 09/10/2012 4:51:00 PM PDT by KentTrappedInLiberalSeattle

Real estate mogul Donald Trump said Monday that Republicans have "got to get tougher" in order to prevail this November, saying he thought their handling of President Obama was "unbelievable."

“The one thing I have to tell the Republicans, they’ve got to get tougher," Trump said during an interview with Fox News. "If they don’t get tough, they’re not going to win this election.”

Trump went on to say that Republicans were "pandering" to the president, and compared their current strategy to that of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in his 2008 presidential campaign.

“Well, I think there are a lot of ways of getting tough," Trump said. "I think they’re pandering to Obama. I think they’re being so nice to Obama. It’s unbelievable. And John McCain made that mistake. He absolutely made that mistake and you know they’re just afraid to attack this man and he should be attacked.”

The reality television star conceded that he thought Democrats might have run a better convention — and benefited from not sharing headlines with the landfall of Hurricane Isaac.

“Let’s face it, I think the Republican convention first of all was hurt by the hurricane, or lack of hurricane, you know the hurricane never really hit heavy in Tampa but I guess they probably had to do what they did," Trump said. "But the fact is that the Democrats gave a great convention, there’s no question about it.”

Trump added that he felt that the Republicans did not include the right mixture of voices at their party convention — mentioning Sarah Palin by name, but also possibly referring to himself. A Trump "surprise event" planned for Monday at the Republican convention was canceled because of the storm.

"I think frankly I would have liked to have seen Sarah Palin speak," Trump said. "I would have liked to have seen some people speak that weren’t invited to speak and you know I think the Republicans did not have the right speakers. They had a lot of people that people say, ‘who are they, where did they come from?’ "

I’ve worked on many, many campaigns. I’ve witnessed even more than that. There is a common theme. When a campaign is behind, the pollster releases a memo explaining why they really are not that much behind and why there is nothing to worry about. It happened when Rick Perry began to slide. It happened when Newt Gingrich began to slide. It happened when Rick Santorum began to slide. It happened when John McCain began to slide in 2008. It happened when Hillary Clinton began to slide.

This is what campaigns do. I treat each and every one of them as an admission against interest that the campaign polling is going against them.

This.

There's a technical term for the sad, inevitable tendency -- every four years, like clockwork -- applicable to the side in any presidential contest whose adherents are forced to chant, idiotically: "... donnnnnnnnn't belieeeeeeeeeve the polllllllllllllssssssssss... donnnnnnnnn't belieeeeeeeeeve the polllllllllllllssssssssss...," over and over and over again.

That term; losers.

Four years ago, on this very site, Team McCain's sycophants were mumbling the same insistent, zombie drone, all the way up to Election Day. Just sayin'.

If the GOP blows this one....I am game for a different approach...at least if they continue playing patty cake. Where is our Lee Atwater? Those guys knew how to campaign back then.

In 2010, our candidates ran hard, no holds barred, and a slew of them won in races the experts never expected could be won. We need more of that and less of the vague attacks and vague solutions we have heard the past few weeks.

That's Trump's job!
Let Romney surrogates go for blood (They certainly did that in the primary!), Romney can remain blissfully above it. And seem Presidential.

Playing defense will not win this, Romney must play offense.

Yep. Total denial was rampant. The GOP-E sure can pick 'em.

...and if Trump would have backed off the birth certificate issue and Limbaugh not called Fluke a slut we would be looking at a one term proposition exactly as Obama had predicted. Those two issues did nothing to advance the cause of conservatism, instead it cost the GOP the White House.

I don’t think Donald’s abandoning ship. He’s right...and wants them to LISTEN. I hope they do.

Romney must play offense.

He needs to start pretending his opponent (Obama) is actually a conservative. That's the only thing that ever seems to excite the ol' bloodlust. ;)

Trump is mostly a clown, but he is absolutely right here. This campaign, so far, feels like 2008 all over again. The only difference is the final result will be a somewhat more narrow victory for Hussein. The R/R campaign has to stop worrying what the media will think of them and start ripping Obama/Biden apart over their horrific economic record.

Romney has more than enough ammo to take out the socialist party. He better make it happen.

To be fair, we were winning at this point in the race last cycle. This is when Palin was rolling strong and getting up to 60000 at her rallies. When the financial institutions went caput in mid September and mccain paused his campaign...that’s when the wheels came off.

I can read this memo two ways, one is erickson’s comparisons to other campaigns using pollsters. The other is that romney has done a prety good job over the summer interrupting the news cycles. it is too early to see a panic. I think they needed to create a news story. There is nothing the candidates could do to change this media polling pile on.

Somebody needs to tell Mitt, and rather quickly, that Barry Soetoro is only HALF BLACK. Barry’s other half is white. When you criticize Obama’s policies, you are being only half a “racist”. Don’t worry about it. Just deal with it and let’s do this.

Trump forcing the birth certificate a year and a half before the election was a great thing. It was clear they were holding on to it to use in this election, but had to use it in 2011 to respond to a fever pitch. It happened so long ago it is a non factor. Fluke was going to be used no matter what. That was the whole purpose of having her ‘testify’ in an empty hearing room . Limbaugh’s comments were just the chosen target, but ultimately it had zero impact. Polling didn’t change. The war on women meme was dropped months ago by all but the nut bags until they could pull it out again a few weeks ago when Akin stepped in it.

neither will have an impact on the November election. Romney will win Missouri. If Obama does not get blamed for the economy, he will be reelected. Everything else is a side issue.
