Defense Firms Warn Of Tens Of Thousands Of Job Cuts
Business Insider ^ | Sep. 10, 2012 | Geoffrey Ingersoll

Whether it's political gamesmanship, or a serious warning, McCain has released letters from three major defense firms that confirm they are sending warnings to their personnel about massive layoffs prior to the Nov. 4 election date.

Philip Ewing of Politico reports that the specific defense firms are Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems and EADS North America. Along with them, ten other defense firms—including Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and General Dynamics—have written McCain letters stating that they are "leaving open the possibility" of sending lay-off letters out to their employees.

The companies all sent letters to McCain stating their worries over "sequestration"—the automatic across-the-board cuts to defense and entitlements set to happen Jan. 1—and warning that moving forward with the plan will cost the U.S. so many jobs that it might throw the country back into recession.

I remember when around 10,000 employees were laid off between GD and McAir when the A-12 program was canceled. I survived, as did my soon to be husband at the time.

IF O wins, there will be many, many days like that across this country and we will be left much worse for it. Our defense is Priority #1 with all the nutjobs in this World. I know there is a lot of waste and fraud but O won’t care, he’ll slash and slash some more.

I think it’s all part of the long term plan. Throw so many former working people into disarray and unfamiliar territory yet keep on the same pressures to ‘pay, pay, pay’ Your bills, your mortgage, your car loan(s), your student loan(s).

Do it long enough and people who would normally turn away from your plans will flock to you for relief from those “pressures”. And then you can do anything you want, ANYTHING.

It would be my 2nd GD layoff, first being in '09.

They greatest threat to the economy is the lack of sh!tting and the lack of getting off the pot by Washington.

NOBODY in Washington is willing to do what needs to be done, they just sit there and blame each other day in and day out and not get a damn thing done!

Cut the damn spending already, from welfare to defense to lavishly overpaid teachers who pay 0 for their retirement.

Of course it won't happen, they will continue to blame each other and destroy the greatest experiment ever to be place upon mankind.

THey’ve known mil spending would decline for many months and have planned for this, so I don’t expect any big impact.

Yep. Obama desperately wants to keep this on the backburner until after the elections, so he can slash away without care. I commend Romney for raising this issue a few days ago- Obama wants to have his cake and eat it, too- like everything else. Don't let him.

I was laid off by GD in 2010 as a result of Obama wanting to get the Gulf Oil Spill off the front pages.

So I’m guessing you don’t work for a defense contractor? Good for you! Me and my wife are in our 50s and work for DOD contractors. We’re not union so we’ll get wacked early on.

Must be great to be you and not feel the impact! Maybe Hope & Change will keep America safe.?

My project managers are sweating bullets over sequestration. The double whammy is that we are in the last month of our current contract. Hoping for contract extensions while we await the award of the follow on proposal.

When I hired on in Dec 1991, the hallways were full of folks working on "black" projects. It was a ghost town of empty offices a year later when Clinton whacked the budget. That sorry state of affairs never really recovered. The company has sold off and outsourced many elements of the company. Getting disengaged from CA has been an aspect of the moves. Getting closer to the customer in DC has also been a driving objective.
