Laredo has landed itself on several lists over the past few years.
Now it's grabbing national attention in an article by the Huffington Post.
Our Lauren Kendrick has more in our top story tonight at six.
"No I don't take it as negative." Mayor of Laredo, Raul Salinas says he's not surprised to hear that Laredo is ranked the least diverse city in the United States. But he's not worried about it.
"In Laredo, it's a unique border city...a great city. The minority is actually the majority."
The article in the Huffington Post states there is 95.7% Hispanics in laredo. That's something Mayor Raul Salinas says has to do with the fact that we're a border town.
"Not too far from now the Latinos are going to be the number one minority group in the whole state of Texas." Someone we spoke to represents the 3.3% of Caucasians in Laredo. He says there are four generations of his family here.
"We had many opportunities to go other places, but we decided to stay. This is a very warm and welcoming community regardless of your ethnic background."
Ed Sherwood says he brought the first general motors factory to the gateway city back in 1981. He says he doesn't feel Laredo being named the least diverse city in the US will affect new businesses from moving here.
"Laredo is open to business. It's open to maquiladora. It's open to logistics companies, manufacturing companies."
He says that those who do decide to start a business in Laredo will most likely end of staying because of the people.
Guess a town can't be "too" anything else.
“Out in the West Texas town of Laredo, I fell in love with a Mexican ghoul”
Ah! Diversity for me, not for thee.
that is clever......
Uh, ... I thought ... "Hispanics can be of any race."
.....Just as long as parents don’t pack peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches for lunch.
Not if they're Mexican. Known fact removes the probability factor. This is Laredo we're talking about.
Well, there’s only one conclusion: committees must be formed to find a solution to this town’s racism problem. Lack of diversity means there must be nasty racists involved. Somebody or somebodies are guilty of not practicing diversity. And it sounds like there’s no inclusion either. Nasty racists! (ptooey)
So why don’t the white liberals prove their love for “diversity” and move to Laredo? No snow/ice, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, cheap labor to clean their lawns and toilets. They can also host an illegal immigrant family. And do volunteer work at the local hospitals to welcome anchor babies.
“As I walked out in the streets of Larado
As I walked out in larado one day
I spied a young man....... sleeping in a cardboard box on the sidewalk
On the Square
November 2009
PS: Whern I lived in Corpus' the only attraction Laredo had was proximity to Boy's Town across the border. I don't expect either one has improved any since then.
Remember about 25 years ago when a Georgia county outside of Atlanta was found to be (gasp) ALL WHITE!
I told my wife to watch how the news media plays this up and look for marches soon.
All the news media immediately picked it up and within a few month Al and Jesse where having marches there to protest its all whiteness.
How soon will Al and Jesse be in Laredo?
ahhhhh such fond memories of ‘’boys town’’ most of the hookers were fine as wine in the summertime. I wouldn’t go near that brothel for fear of hooking up with a mexican he/she.
If they’re all legal citizens,so what?
If they’re not, bust their asses and ship them back to the country from where they’re invading.
San Jose, one of the safest cities in the US, had a rate of 2.1/100,000. Gary IN was 51.5/100,000.
As per wikipedia, (yeah, I know), my little berg was 97.14% WHITE in the 2000 census. So...Im calling Bull$hit on this story.
...and one of the then, two , black families has moved away since then. Obviously these fella’s never been to the middle of Kansas.
And the two reverends are more than welcome to come for a visit. I’m sure the Volgas will have a nice meal for them, then send them on their way.
“Looks to be a pretty safe city. The murder rate in 2010 was 3.9/100,000 according to city-data.com.”
El Paso also kicks butt when it comes to a low murder rate, and they’re just across from Juarez...one of the highest in the world. And they are also very Hispanic (obviously). Interesting...
