WaPo admits: GM’s vaunted Volt is on the road to nowhere fast

AS A CANDIDATE for president in 2008, Barack Obama set a goal of getting 1 million all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road by 2015. In February 2011, the Obama administration’s Energy Department issued an analysis purporting to show that, with the help of subsidies and tax credits, “the goal is achievable.” This was a paltry claim in the first place, since 1 million cars amount to less than 1 percent of the total U.S. fleet. Yet it is increasingly clear that, despite the commitment of many millions of taxpayer dollars, the United States will not hit Mr. Obama’s target by 2015. A recent CBS News analysis suggested that we’ll be lucky to get a third of the way there.

Buying the Volt is like buying a new TV from Britain to be used in America. Wrong voltage, wrong frequency.

Only totally converted socialistic countries with high fuel costs should go electric, Britain actually is a good candidate except historically anything electrical from England is crap or smoke, though they did well with radar.

The absolute best “money-maker” would be for Pres. Romney to eliminate the Energy Dept. that has been in charge of increasing the cost of energy ten-fold since its creation. Talk about a bad investment of billions of taxpayer dollars!

I'm the perfect candidate for an electric car. I seldom go more than 10-20 miles round trip, I live in a high population density area with a lot of braking, and I like the idea of zero emissions.

A few problems:
1) It won't fit three carseats for the kids.
2) I live in a condo with street parking. Am I supposed to hang 400 feet of extension cord out the window?
3) It's pricy for a small car. I could afford one, but it would hurt, and I don't see anything on the positive side of the ledger beyond the George Clooney smug effect.

It's like liberals have no idea how anyone lives day-to-day in this country. Alternative-reality based community, you might say.

The logic of today’s liberalism says that it’s patriotic to purchase a new or even a used Chevrolet Volt and if you merely wish you could afford one...well, that’s patriotic enough.

Oil prices are pretty much the same worldwide. UK gas prices are high because they slap on heavy % rate taxes. We pay, on average, 50 cents per gallon in federal and state excise taxes on gas. They pay, at current prices, $4.60 per gallon just in taxes. Add on a base gasoline price of $3.10, and that's where the $7.70 per gallon UK gasoline price comes from.

“So far, GM has sold a little more than 21,000 Volts, even with the help of a $7,500 tax credit, recent dealer discounting and U.S. government purchases. “

I see the administration just ordered 1500 Volts for the Marine Corps. That one government purchase alone is 8% of all Volts sold so far.

In case you’re wondering, those stratospheric gasoline taxes pay for socialized health care and other welfare state goodies. It’s also why their roads tend to be in excellent shape. With 9x the tax burden per gallon, they had better be. The next time someone goes on and on about the autobahn, just grin and tell him we like our roads just the way they are.

I read a stat in our *paper of record*, the Hartford Courant, the other day: *There are 2.1 M cars registered in our state. 95 of them are electric cars.* Heh.

And that's in a small state like CT, where most things that people want to get to are only 25 miles away. Meriden to Hartford, Cheshire to New Haven, Southington to Waterbury, etc.

Now take that idea to Texas, or Florida, or California, states with big populations, but much more driving needed. Suddenly, your little Volt goes into gasoline mode, attaining uninspiring mileage.

So the American taxpayer funds the research and then the Russians and Chinese come in and buy the company so they don’t pay the research costs. Democrats are dumber than donuts. This is stupid that is so bad that it borders on being treason.

I pulled up behind a Volt on the way to work today. Very nice looking car. Oh well, nice on the outside with a power train no one wants.

Sticker Price: $40,000

Tax Credit: $7,500

Is that one of those "middle-class tax cuts" that Obummer keeps bragging about?

Any bets that the Corps will be using those useless boat anchors on the ranges for strafing and target practice within another year? At least as targets the POS Volt would serve a useful purpose.

........”One of the talking points that Obama’s reelection campaign has been pushing is that “Bin Laden is dead and GM is alive!” It’s fair to say that the success of GM is a pretty important linchpin to his reelection case.

Something that Obama has not been running on is his failed attempts to force his green dreams on an unwilling public. You won’t see him selling bumper stickers about Solyndra or Fisker.

For Obama, his supposed successes and his actual failures merge into one story. Such is the case with the Chevy Volt, Obama’s green initiative and GM’s “moonshot.”...........
