Despite Threats, No Marines Guarded U.S. Consulate In Libya
Breitbart.com ^ | September 12, 2012 | John Nolte

On a target date like the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, it is quite the jaw-dropping revelation to learn that there were no Marines guarding the U. S. consulate where Chris Stevens, our ambassador to Libya, was brutally murdered yesterday:

Marine Corps spokeswoman Capt. Kendra Motz said that Marines were not posted to the consulate, unlike the embassy in the capital, Tripoli.

A defense official told POLITICO on Wednesday that the Pentagon is sending an elite team of about 50 additional Marines, called a Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team, to reinforce the embassy.

A senior administration official Wednesday called the Benghazi consulate “an interim facility,” which the State Department began using “before the fall of Qadhafi.” It was staffed Tuesday by Libyan and State Department security officers. The consulate came under fire from heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades at about 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday. By the time the attack ended several hours later, four Americans were dead and three others had been injured.

The Benghazi consulate had “lock-and-key” security, not the same level of defenses as a formal embassy, an intelligence source told POLITICO. That means it had no bulletproof glass, reinforced doors or other features common to embassies. The intelligence source contrasted it with the American embassy in Cairo, Egypt – “a permanent facility, which is a lot easier to defend.” The Cairo embassy also was attacked Tuesday.

I think the biggest story is Barry going to sleep while the ambassador was MIA. Then there is the failed rescue mission that was apparently lead by the Libyans with only a handful of US Marines riding shotgun. WTF!!!

Just for a little clarification here,

As a standard practice, Marine Security Guards guard embassies. They do not usually guard consultates so this really is not unusual. Perhaps a question should be asked if Stevens was in fear of his life, why did he not make his way back to the embassy? If we want Marines to be guarding every consulate out there as well as embassies, we better get ready to enlarge the Marine Security Forces exponentially.

Just wait. They’ll blame the lack of security on the dead Ambassador. He’ll be in no position to refute the lies. Will the gutless Republican Congress do anything to force answers to the questions being asked here on FR?

"No Marines in Libya, in Egypt, no ammo."

There were Marines in Libya. At the embassy in Tripoli. Marine Security forces guard embassies, not consulates. However, if this news item about Egypt and the MSG Marines were not allowed to carry live rounds turns out to be true, that's a firestorm waiting to happen. Beirut all over again...

One things for sure, the narcissist in chief better be asked questions why his Egyptian ambassador had a standing order for the Marines to go around unarmed. (if it’s indeed true). This wench should have been recalled after she put out that statement and then stood by it after the administration denounced it.

Thanks for the explanation. Something though, I think has to be done. If the report from Egypt is true (please god, don’t let it be!) then a real problem has set in over at State. Ambassadors either leaving the protection of their MSGs for reasons unknown or worse, not allowing those MSGs to do their jobs.

Looks as if the Marines sent in to help were *set-up*. When the dust settles...I hope heads will roll.

"standard practice" on the anniversary of 9/11 at a consulate in Libya?
Inexcusable!

Marine Security forces guard embassies, not consulates.

Not so. Many, if not most, of our consulates have MSGs.

Historically, in every security incident State Department has been found complicit. They never learn. More tea? Cookies?

USS Liberty version 2.

US government stands down while our military is attacked. Even the term “USS Liberty” still makes some arrogant governmental traitors butt cheeks clinch because 34 Americans were slaughtered and 170 wounded and our government (both led by traitorous owned Democrats) did nothing and no one cared. This is about our own government leadership and their complete and abject failure to hold accountable our attackers once again.

A similar line will be published in Wikipedia for this entire Libyan boondoggle setup.

""standard practice" on the anniversary of 9/11 at a consulate in Libya?"

Now it's starting to sound like they had credible evidence that there would be a problem. All the embassies and consulates should have been beefed up with security if this is true. On 9/11, I don't think the ambassador should have been away from the embassy.

"Many, if not most, of our consulates have MSGs."

Some do, but not all of them. It should not be assumed that this one had MSGs which is what everyone is doing. We have little information about this consulate. Who knows how big it even was.

What's more disturbing to me is this Egyptian ambassador who supposedly had a standing order that the Marines were not to have loaded weapons. Seriously? You have crazies trying to break into the compound and you're not going to be locked and loaded? I'll bet they are now.

Most do. Here is a list of the MSG detachment posts around the world

We do know that the consulate was in an interim facility and lacked proper security. And that about 25 members were evacuated from the consulate. Amb Stevens was just visiting the consulate accompanied by a US personal protection detail. Here is a fairly comprehensive article on the attack on the consulate and the events surrounding it.

The Pentagon has denied that was the case. FYI: The US Ambassador, Anne Patterson, was not at the Embassy during these events. She was in Washington DC.
