The 1950s were a disastrous period for American technology and economic advance.

In 1949 I was three years old.
My Dad worked two jobs.
My parents rented a small apartment.
We walked everywhere we went.
We burned wood and coal in a fire place.
Mom did laundry by hand with water she heated on the stove.

In 1950, my dad got a promotion, quit his second job, and over the next ten years:

My parents bought a new house.
Dad bought his first new automobile.
We bought our first TV.
We got air condition.
Mom got a washer and dryer.
Dad bought a second automobile.
We had natural gas heating installed.

That was a disastrous period, indeed.

only one error that I saw, Ray Kroc was a shake machine rep when he started as a franchising agent for McDonalds then he bought the franchising rights for McDonalds. While he tried to buy the actual stores, the McDonald brothers wouldnt transfer over the property rights. He then stiffed the brothers on their royalty agreements (1.9%) and built new stores close to the originals and drove them out of business.

I guess I learned something as a manager at McDonalds all those years ago!

Basically, Americans are people who don’t know when they’re licked. They refuse to believe they can’t accomplish something...even when they really can’t accomplish something. They keep on trying. Americans aren’t naturally smarter than people from other countries. But we are a people who won’t quit even when we should quit. Which is why you have the stories of so many people like Reynolds and his pens. A man who had a dream and wouldn’t give up on his dream.

It’s against the law to start a small manufacturing shop in any one of many very sparsely populated counties in the middle of nowhere. Mountains of legalized briberies (government fees, builders’ rackets, needless engineering fees, few allowed methods and materials in codes, etc.) stand in the way of owners building their own homes or otherwise using their own properties (regulations, “impact fees” decreed by respected gangsters, etc.).

In the past, most business owners agreed that competition was healthy for business and good for the economy. Now many are connected by familial and other relationships with government at various levels and do all that they can to outlaw competition (environmentalism, animal worship, pathological social behaviors, gossip,...).

The economic consequences of such policies are in front of us.

The secret to prosperity is simple. Some people will use marginal wealth effectively to produce more real wealth. Other people will not. When wealth is allowed to remain in the hands of those who use it to generate more real wealth, the percentage of wealth which is being used to generate more is substantial, thus the amount of real wealth generated is likewise substantial and prosperity abounds. When wealth is instead redistributed to those who cannot or will not use it to generate more, then little new wealth is generated, making stagnation the order of the day.

Obama-style "stimulus" will not cure stagnation any more than sea water will cure thirst. Communism has never accomplished any good for anyone except those who could manipulate the levers of power toward their own ends.
