DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS
Powerline ^ | SEPTEMBER 15, 2012 | PAUL MIRENGOFF

Posted on 09/15/2012 2:19:36 PM PDT by lasereye

Here in the Northern Virginia ad market, Team Obama continues its merciless pounding of Mitt Romney. Although Team Romney says it is blitzing the airwaves in certain key areas, most of the ads in this market still come from Obama. And, as has been the case all season, the Obama ads are troublesome for Romney.

The latest I’ve seen (which apparently has been running for some time) quotes Romney to the effect that class size doesn’t matter in education. The ad also says that Romney supports the Ryan budget that “could cut education by 20 percent.” It concludes that Romney is simply out of touch with the educational needs of ordinary Americans, thus tying the ad to Obama’s larger theme that Romney is too wealthy to “get it.”

Romney hasn’t really said that class size doesn’t matter. Rather, his position is that class size is not determinative of educational outcomes and that other factors (parent involvement, teacher quality, good administrators) matter more.

Romney hasn’t really said that class size doesn’t matter. Rather, his position is that class size is not determinative of educational outcomes and that other factors (parent involvement, teacher quality, good administrators) matter more.

Romney bases this view on studies and on his experience as Massachusetts Governor. It is certainly a defensible position. Indeed, according to the Romney campaign, Obama’s own Secretary of Education has promoted teacher quality over class size as the key to educational outcomes.

But that’s not important right now. What matters is that this ad will alarm middle class voters in Northern Virginia and wherever else, in swing states, class sizes swell. Thus, it will cost Romney votes.

Frankly, every anti-Romney ad I’ve seen to date has struck me as effective. Team Obama seems well as its way to inflicting on Romney death by a thousand cuts.

Also, class size doesn’t matter when you have discipline.

That he has to blitz advertise in an area of VA that should be solidly for him is bad news, not good news for team O.

But I know, never bother the Conservative Eeyore choir at Powerline with inconvenient facts.

Okay folks. Listen up. I work for a VERY LEFT WING organization and the employees sit at work day in and day out demoralizing conservatives by posting on our web sites. Pay attention to the “we can’t win” themes. PAY ATTENTION!!!

Thank you. The Eyroe choir in the "conservative" media does this every election. They think spending all their time shooting their own in the back rather then using their forums as a platform to attack the Left "helps".

No, it merely indicates the "conservative" posting the crap is the useful idiot of the Democrat Party propaganda machine

Frankly I’ve had it with naysayers. You can see it and it’s infects the entire group.
I haven’t posted on this site for years but I’m at the end of my rope. I just wish that ALL Freepers would get this word out. TRUST ME ON THIS, the left wingers are on their computers day and night - getting marching orders from the president’s men at Le Casa Blanca and I know if first hand.

I agree. I will help every way I can.

The GOP is not perfect they are only 85% better then the Democrats. Apprently too many Conservatives would rather have 100% of nothing then 85% of something

Get the word out. It’s a serious and well organized effort and people are being paid to do this.

My 5th grade class had 58 students. Needing glasses I could barely see to the other side of the room ~ they took half the kids to do finger painting. Then they had a flu epidemic and nobody got to school but me.

They never did the other half. I never did finger painting. No one complained about it!

1 teacher; 58 kids; she did it without a paddle.

People who want our country destroyed live here, work for our airlines, and are submitted to the exact same airport shakedown as a lumberman from Idaho. Ryan was just in the tidewater area. I am not sure why people are getting upset so over that stupid class room size ad. It is a bad ad.

I went to the gym this afternoon for my two-hour run. I can see 7 different tvs. I really did not see many ads by either Romney or 0bama. I saw more ads by the Rob Sobhani and the question 7 ballot measure in Maryland. I saw the new crossroad ad attacking Obama and the new Romney a few times.

It an add designed to fire up the base, not reach independent or GOP voters. The people he is trying to rally are the ones who should be voting for him all ready. The 0bama camp are absolutely desperate to get the Democrat base motivated.

right, the couple in the ad looks like a couple that would hand out apples on Halloween instead of candy.

No one wants to be them.

They say class sizes in East Asia (Japan, Taiwan etc.) are much larger than here. They score far better in everything: math, science etc. I remember reading that Japanese know American history better than the average American.

It’s perplexing. They certainly can’t be running low on funds this soon. OTOH we have to assume they know what they’re doing. Do their internal polls show them well ahead in VA? There was one poll recently that showed that but it’s assumed by knowledgeable people to be a fluke.

Let me pick the 15 then let me pick the 30 and I’ll prove him wrong.

Heck, let me pick 60 and I can prove him wrong.

A LOT has to do with upbringing, courtesy, desire to learn, and natural ability, etc.

Well.. nice that Romney is countering Obama`s ads up there in NorVa, but Obama is unopposed in the ad wars down here in the Hampton Roads area.

I live on the Eastern Shore, but only get Hampton Roads stations (no cable or satellite) and I'm seeing as many Romney ads as Bambi ads every night.

Personally I'm sick of all of them, but that is another issue.

“The rep base is not Northern VA.”

Seems like Virginia lost a part of itself in the 1860’s.

Perhaps it’s time for northern VA to partition off from the rest of the state and join up with Maryland... :)
