Romney's Scattered Campaign Message Baffles Strategists
The Washington Post/Standard.net ^ | Sat, 09/15/2012 - 7:48 | By Karen Tumulty

Coming at a moment of international crisis, as U.S. embassies in the Middle East were beset by anti-American protests, the interview brought shudders from some Republicans who fear the Romney campaign is running aground in its final stretch.

"Deaver is turning over in his grave," said one prominent Republican strategist, referring to Michael Deaver, the late image-maker for Ronald Reagan. The Republican asked for anonymity, because he did not want to go public with his growing despair over the GOP ticket’s prospects for winning this fall.

"I can’t get my head around this," said John Weaver, a former strategist on Republican John McCain’s presidential campaigns. "What is their message? What is going on here? This is not a complicated race against Obama. This is about having a detailed plan to move this economy forward and don’t make any unforced errors and be disciplined and focused. They’re anything but that."

Romney also declined to attack Obama over his characterization of Egypt as not being an ally, something his advisers have done. He pointed out that the country is, officially, a non-NATO ally, but explained what the president seemed to mean.

"The president’s saying ’they are not’ may reflect the fact that there’s been a change in government and a change in relationship as a result of that," Romney said. "And what their status will be going forward in terms of the relationship with our nation is something which I’m sure will be developing over time."

Before an audience of campaign donors, however, Romney sharply condemned Obama for not making time to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later this month at the U.N. General Assembly.

"I thought the president’s decision not to meet with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu was an extraordinarily confusing and troubling decision,"

I do question however the WaPo in this regard.

Anyone know the author?

Be cautious whenever papers publish statements from “anonymous Republicans”

They are usually anonymous because the source is a well-known RINO, or they don’t exist. Remember what these “insiders” said about Paul Ryan.

Congressional Republicans said Romney should make a concise, bold promise to reform wasteful spending in Washington.

“He should say, ‘I will manage your money in Washington. I will eliminate waste, fraud and abuse. Obama wants you to send more money so he can spend more money.’”

I’d love to see Romney’s internal polling.

These guys are either 100% convinced they’ve won already or they are idiots. Let’s hope for the former.

I’d like for Romney to come up with a specific list of things that he will repair when elected.

So now we have the 'helpful' Mitt stepping in to clean up Obama's verbal messes.

Memo to the Romney campaign: Nice guys finish last!

One thing you never see is the Democrats off message like this. There are all these players who are nominally Republicans (Peggy “I voted for Obama because I wanted to look cool” Noonan, Steve “MSNBC prostitute”Schmidt, John Weaver (McCain actually fired him), the ever present anonymous GOP stategist which does not have the guts to speak on the record, and others) who are trying to advance their own cause by undermining Romney’s campaign.

You would never see a Democrat do this.

As opposed to Obama’s message of a long hard road to poverty and marxist enlightenment?

The Weekly Standard published an open letter to Romney from contributor Peter J. Hansen urging him to be more specific in his policy prescriptions. Conservative media titan Rupert Murdoch this week tweeted: “Romney must draw a clear line: offer a specific path to restore the American dream versus ugly Obama class war with jobs disappearing.”

Again no one named in the entire article, thus completely made up out of whole clothe to meet a libs deadline. Just like the anonymous Republican strategist. No attribution, then the “person” does not exist. No balls, no glory.

Two legislators said Romney’s image as a seasoned Mr. Fix-it is undermined by the perceived vagueness of his policy agenda.

“If you’re going to bring it to the American people, you’ve got to show details,” said the lawmaker who questioned what he saw as efforts during the GOP convention to cast Romney as a warm and fuzzy candidate.
