What an iSore: Apple's massive new 100-acre solar farm (NC)

Huge, ugly and cluttered, it is almost the antithesis of Apple's iconic design style.

Apple has almost finished work on a massive solar farm next to its data centre in North Carolina, hoping to boost its green credentials - but scarring the landscape with a 100-acre eyesore at the same time.

Where are they going to put all that cr@p when the enterprise goes belly-up (as it will)?

IDK, it doesn’t look that bad to me, especially compared to Pasadena, TX and all the chemical plants there (not to mention the sulfuric odor that permeates the place).

I drove by the site nearly every day it was under construction.. Acres of trees were felled to make room for this monument to green energy. I wonder how much carbon dioxide was reprocessed naturally into oxygen by those trees and if their loss was subtracted from the carbon footprint reduction projections for the solar farm.

Each panel in the farm is installed on a tracker, which keeps everything pointing at the sun, scooping up as much of the Californian rays as possible.

How does this collector scoop up "California rays" if it is located in North Carolina? I guess one could say the rays are the same in North Carolina and California if they come from the same sun..... But that is stretching it.

According to another article I read, Apple is planting trees elsewhere to replace the ones they cut down. Don’t have a cite, so I don’t know how reliable that is.

Pictures from before they started indicate that about 50% of the area was wooded. But, there were a lot of complaints from neighbors about the smoke. They burned a lot of the cleared trees and brush on site.

Haven’t you heard the saying, “...so far back in the sticks we have to pump in sunshine”?

Well....

Quite frankly, I’d love to have a panel or two at my house! And I’m seriously considering... it will pay for itself in 2 years, and free electric from there on! It’s not because it’s green, it’s because it’s free!

Amazing. I guess they don’t have hail storms in NC the same as we do here in Virginia!

This thing is about 10 miles from my house. I’ll have to go take a look.

Are Google and facebook down today? Of course not, they are on the grid as the rest of us are. It is overcast in this area (Hickory, NC) today and will be all day. So much for green!

Apple murdered literally millions of plants and animals to build a solar grid that is totally unnecessary, doing it to make liberals feel good about themselves all in the name of Green Energy.

I have never heard that saying before but I think I’m going to try to steer a conversation this week so I can use it.

Wonder why they didn’t build it in CA? Does NC like being colonized as the dumping ground for Apple’s ugly installation of PC idiocy?

“it will pay for itself in 2 years”

Who told you the math behind this? It won’t be two years. You’ll be lucky to get a 20 year return.

Better yet- go take a before/after picture after the next wind/hail/storm that comes through

I bet these things fly real aerodynamically in a nice tornado.
