The Obama administration is prepared to bring a case against the Chinese government at the World Trade Organization, an official confirms.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer has the details:

While President Barack Obama travels to Columbus and Cincinnati Monday for campaign appearances, his administration also will ask the World Trade Organization, or WTO, to step up a review of what the White House says are unfair duties that China levies on American-made cars. The case is technically separate from the auto parts case but the administration says it presents another example of China's trade-policy abuse.

While I realize there are a lot of auto workers in Ohio, this amounts to what? 0.0016% of the U.S. trade deficit with China?

It would be more effective for me to claim that I was going to balance my household budget by cutting my twice weekly trips to Starbucks to once a week . . . but only after the neighborhood home owner's association gave me a favorable ruling.

Doesn’t Obama realize this is the worst possible time for the U.S. to lodge complaints against China?

Chinese protesters have been in full riot mode for the past week and could easily switch their violent animosity away from Japan, which is simply threatening to take over a few islands, to the U.S., which is now threatening to hurt China’s already faltering economy with trade sanctions.

Also, the Chinese leadership has enough problems at the moment trying to maintain its economy and restore domestic tranquility its cities without having to deal with the asinine president of a country it’s been propping up financially for years. This could be the final straw for the Chinese Politboro. How do you say, ‘’That’s it! Sell all our U.S. Treasury bills immediately!’’ in Chinese?
