US diplomats in Beirut burning classified material amid protests

Diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut have started to destroy classified material as a security precaution amid anti-American protests in Lebanon and elsewhere in the Middle East and North Africa.

A State Department status report obtained Monday by The Associated Press said the Beirut embassy had "reviewed its emergency procedures and is beginning to destroy classified holdings." It also said that local Lebanese employees were sent home early due to protests by the militant Shiite group Hezbollah over an anti-Muslim film produced in the U.S.

In Washington, a State Department official said there was no imminent threat to the heavily fortified Beirut embassy, which is about an hour away from where the nearest demonstration is planned

I also heard a few minutes ago on FOX (Bret Baier) that per Catherine Herridge’s sources in the intel community there was no “demonstration” taking place before the attacks in Libya. Keep in mind these were not just rocks and AK47’s...there were RPG’s and other more sophisticated weapons that can only be deployed by TRAINED men.

This morning i caught Susan Rice,ambassador to the UN on TV. I guess a weekend talk show interview.
All i heard her say was “we had no actionable intelligence” in regards to the attacks. Of course that leads me to believe we did have intelligence but it never reached the level of ‘actionable’. Not actionable i guess includes no bullets. The other thought that came to mind is why would our ambassador to the UN be in that intelligence loop? That makes absolutely no sense at all at least in my eyes. To me she was given a specific response to say on TV and did so.

If she was not challenged, by the interviewer(s) and doubting she was, she will be perceived as the voice of all knowledge on the subject and the voice of authority, stating only the truth. Sad, what has become of those who are supposed to inform Americans and not spread propaganda.

Why in 2012 do we have paper copies of classified material at embassies?

Maybe we did not have enough specific intelligence to go after the exact people who were planning an attack, but we could have increased our security around our embassies and consulates in the ME. Perhaps an ambassador should have postponed a trip to a lightly protected consulate until after the eleventh anniversary of nine-eleven, especially after the attack on the Embassy in Cairo.
