UNREAL: Mother Arrested And Jailed For Allowing Kids To Play Outside

A stay-at-home mom from La Porte has filed a lawsuit against the city’s police department, an unknown officer and one of her neighbors.

Tammy Cooper said she was wrongly accused of endangering her children and was even forced to spend the night in jail, all because she let her kids play outside.

She said her children, ages 9 and 6, were riding their motorized scooters in the cul-de-sac where they live while she watched from a lawn chair in her front yard just a few feet away.

“I was out there the entire time,” Cooper said. “I never left that lawn chair the entire time.”

Cooper said a little while later, a La Porte police car pulled up in front of her home.

“I went out there to see what he was here for and he said, ‘Ma’am, we’re here for you.’ I said, ‘Oh really? Why?’ He proceeded to tell me he had received a call from one of my neighbors that my kids were riding their scooters unsupervised.

In one quote, she claims to have been out there the entire time. In the next quote, she says she went out there to see what was he was here for.

It sounds an awfult lot as if the kids were playing in the street while momma was inside watching the soaps (or whatever the 21st Century equivalent of watching the soaps may be).

“I’m guessing there’s more to this story...”

Yeah, the “more to the story” is that this is LaPorte, Texas. Home to morons in uniform.

“I went out there to see what he was here for

Doesn't sound as if the police showed up while the kids were riding outside.

No, she went “out there” to the street. Did you expect the cops to park their car on her front lawn? Use your brains.

LaPorte has long been known as a speed trap town with ridiculously low speed limits within its limits. It is home to the Houston Yacht Club and on a major route to the boating centers near Houston. It was quite common for people visiting the area to not be aware of the towns reputation and donate to the coffers.

I was very active in the boating community when I lived in nearby Pasadena. We were well aware of the cops activities and still had a problem staying within the speed limits.

I hope the lady breaks their bank and then some...

I hope she bankrupts the cops and this “neighbor”.

Why always assume the JBT’s are right.

More bozos with badges.

This is why many of us here at FR hate the donut-munching dog-shooting cowards.

And>>>>>>> Since when is it a crime to let your kids play outside unsupervised? If that were they case, my entire neighborhood would have been behind bars when I was a kid.

I’m surprised the cops didn’t shoot her dog, too.

I too believe there is more to the story.

The police may have a case since the two kids are under the age of being able to ride the bike licensed. IF they were riding in the street and not on their own property then she would be in violation of allowing underage kids riding a motor vehicle in the road. I know this is against the law. I got busted for it back in the 70s when me and some friends were riding my minibike from our yard into the street in front of my house and back into my yard. The cops stopped by to tell my dad that we can’t cross the sidewalk or we would be breaking the law by taking an unlicensed vehicle into a roadway and that we would need to have drivers licenses to do so. We didn’t get arrested or ticketed but we did get warned. As should this woman have been if this is what happened.

You’re an utter moron if you think this is true. The police won’t pay a dime. Any award she may be given will be taken from the taxpayers, not the police. In other words, WE get punished for some idiot neighbor using the police to try to control the lives of others, and the police stupidly allow them to.

That’s the stupidest thing I ever heard.

Sounds like nosy neighbors and dumb dog-shooters to me.

I hope she wins.

I always like to see cops pay and pay and pay.....

Well, that’s what you get for living in an area with stupid cops.

If your taxes have to pay for this, tough.

Hire better civil servants and tell old nebby idiot neighbors to mind their business or else.

Lol - no kidding! We got put out in the morning, showed up for lunch, and were gone again until supper!

My kids did the same - but I did check on them regularly. We lived out in the country, so it was a little safer.
