Rep. Todd Akin’s wife, Lulli Akin, says the Republican Party’s attempts to push her husband out of the Missouri Senate race — over his false assertion that women who are raped rarely get pregnant — are like rape itself. RELATED: Akin TV Ad Buy Canceled — For Failure To Pay Station
She also believes the GOP’s abandonment is on par with the tyranny that launched the American Revolution.
Akin’s wife isn’t the first one to compare Akin’s explosive rape comments, and the ensuing fallout, to rape: Bryan Fischer said the party’s treatment of the embattled candidate had made Akin “a victim of forcible assault.”
Lulli Akin made the charge in a new National Journal profile, which reveals a family affair of a campaign — Akin’s campaign manager is his son, and Lulli is also a key player.
Lulli Akin says in the profile that she is not turned off by the refusal of national Republicans to contribute money to the race. She says small donations — and God’s will — will help her husband win:
“God can increase,” she said, citing the “Feeding of the 5,000” — a Gospel miracle in which Jesus uses five small barley loaves and two small fish to feed a multitude. The campaign will take small contributions, “respect them, and say ‘God, multiply it. Make it pay,’ ” Lulli Akin said. “It brought us through the primary, same way. We’re gonna see it again, because God wants to be honored.”
Lulli Akin echoed her husband’s disdain for Republican leaders:
Lulli Akin said that efforts to push her husband out of the race threaten to replace elections “by the people and for the people” with “tyranny, a top-down approach.” She added, “Party bosses dictating who is allowed to advance through the party and make all the decisions—it’s just like 1776 in that way.”
She cited colonists who “rose up and said, ‘Not in my home, you don’t come and rape my daughters and my … wife. But that is where we are again. There has been a freedom of elections, not tyranny of selections since way back. Why are we going to roll over and let them steamroll us, be it Democrats or Republicans or whomever?”
Todd Akin said his wife’s comparisons to 1776 were “a little more grandiose than the way I would say it” — but he did say that there is a “this tremendous sense of uprising I feel among the people I talk to.”
You fund Akin then. Get down with you Missourable self!
I'm not in Missouri nor am I prescient; so, I wouldn't pretend to know the voters’ minds there; however, if Akin loses, the slash and burn tactics of the GOP-e will be as much to blame as the single, unfortunate, misspoken comment for which Akin profusely apologized. Let's be honest here; I am not naieve ...this was, and is, a lot more about whether Akin's comment would have a negative effect upon all the "wonderful" moderate candidates the GOP-e is offering us as opposed to whether Akin could win in Missouri. The GOP-e decided to sacrifice Akin in order to give their moderate loser insiders a boost.

Americans aren`t nearly as free- or critical-thinking as they fancy themselves. They wait for cues from another source, and whoever gets at them most wins.
If that is the case, the Republic is truly lost.
Torricelli was a popular guest for the Democrats on the Sunday morning talk shows, until he criticized his own party, the Democrats.

Torricelli was disciplined last month when a Senate ethics panel “severely admonished” the senator for violating Senate rules in accepting gifts from a political backer.
While questions about Torricelli's ethics are eroding support for his reelection, Richards said New Jersey voters aren't automatically switching to the GOP.
“Women, independents and especially Democrats have defected from (Torricelli's) campaign in significant numbers, but only a handful overall have gone to Forrester,” Richards said. “Fifty-six percent of voters who say they've heard about the Senate Ethics Committee action admonishing Torricelli say it makes them less likely to vote for him.”
California is not the subject. Apparently you think it is a fine thing for the GOP to not fund GOP candidates in California - but think it a betrayal for them to not fund an idiot candidate (and his family) in Missouri.

That's what the Akin supporters and the religious right believe, but I don't think that's so. Its just a political calculation that his remarks made him unelectable. Akin cannot win enough support beyond his conservative base to get above 50%. No one except the rabid Akin crowd believes that he has a chance. In a race that was an almost certain pickup for the GOP that's a bitter pill to swallow.
The end result of all of this will be Akin without a job, McCaskill ensconced for another six years, and the GOP probably just short of control of the Senate. Akin is not doing any of us any favors.

Akin is the GOP candidate. He is the party nominee and his name will appear on the same ticket with the rest of the GOP candidates including Mitt Romney.
I don't understand your hatred of this fine man with a fine family. You seem to have a problem that his son, a former US Marine officer, serves as his campaign manager. His son also cashed federal checks serving his country. You are one sick puppy.
First of all, for the record, I am neither of the religious right nor was I even aware of Akin’s candidacy prior to the “flap” over his comments. That said, the voters in MO picked him to run as the Republican Senate candidate. The GOP was within its rights to privately approach Akin and suggest for the good of the Party that he step down; however, once he indicated he was not going to do so they should have left it alone. Their rancor and spitefulness will only assure your and their self-fullfilling prophecy.
I happen to disagree w/Akin’s all-inclusive stand against any type of abortion; however, I respect his position and I respect the right of MO voters to pick their candidate. What the GOP-e has done and continues to do is disrespectful to the voters of MO and just plain wrong.
Yes, the technical deadline is 25 September, but in all practicality, that window of opportunity closed weeks ago, unless a big-name candidate came in within a few days from now.
But Akin, convinced he`s on the way to victory, has refused to budge, so... the point is moot.

I take it that you are not very well informed about how this race has unfolded.
McCaskill spent several million dollars running ads that were designed to help him win the nomination. I saw them, they were very cleaver and very effective. Additionally, she encouraged Democrat cross over in the primary, again aimed at helping Akin win the nomination.
He may be the Republican candidate, but the Democrats were damned glad to have him. Once he made his major gaff, it was easy to see why McCaskill did what she did.
Huckabee and Dobson are supporting him for their own purposes, he’s being used for there own agenda and not what’s good for the people of Missouri. I happen to think that this will hurt the pro life movement and it will certainly hurt the GOP chances for control of the Senate. It’s instructive to see how easy it was for McCaskill to get conservatives to help her win.

And, just why did McCaskill and out-of-state Democrats super pacs run their ads during a primary in which she had no opponent in the Democratic primary and singled Akin out by name, saying he is the true conservative?
Drudge Report - 8/22/12 - Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin (R) won his three-person primary in part with help from Democrats. Hoping that Akin would be the easiest for Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) to defeat, Democrats spent $1.5 million on ads that subtly helped his primary campaign — by making him sound more conservative than rivals. One radio ad bought by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said, “Todd Akin calls himself the true conservative, but is he too conservative?” The ad’s narrator noted the negative posture Akin has taken toward President Obama and concluded, “it’s no surprise Todd has been endorsed by the most conservative leaders in our country — Michele Bachmann and Mike Huckabee.”
Akin can win this thing, but he’s going to have to do this with his supporters. His made himself toxic to Republicans across the country, to save their own skins, they distanced themselves from him. On the other hand, he did sort of apologize for misspeaking with regard to “legitimate rape,” distinguishing forcible rape from lesser forms of sexual assault; and, claiming now that pregnancies due to forcible rape are merely rare, not impossible. That might apology may be sufficient in Missouri; but, he’s going to have to raise some serious money.
