US declassifies Cold War nuclear plan
The Times of India ^ | Tuesday, September 18, 2012 | IANS

Posted on 09/17/2012 8:44:07 PM PDT by Jyotishi

Washington: The US National Security Archive has fully declassified the most controversial nuclear policy document of the Cold War, the Presidential Directive 59 (PD-59) http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Presidential-Directive-59 , which focused on a possible nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

The full text of the document, available on the US National Security Archive page at George Washington University's website, provides insights about the thinking of key US officials about the state of nuclear planning and the possible progression of events should war break out.

In a surprising reverse from previous policies, PD-59 called for pre-planned nuclear strike options and capabilities for rapid development of target plans against such key target categories as "military and control targets," including nuclear forces, command and control, stationary and mobile military forces, and industrial facilities that supported the military.

A key element of PD-59 was to use high-tech intelligence to find nuclear weapons targets, strike them with "pinpoint" precision, and then assess the damage.

The architects of PD-59 envisioned the possibility of protracted nuclear war with the Soviet Union that avoided escalation to all-out conflict.

The archive's annotation emphasises the fact that the US nuclear doctrine has not been altered much since PD-59 became effective, and "while President Obama has set a nuclear-free world as a policy goal, it is unlikely that nuclear planning arrangements will change significantly in the foreseeable future".

Highly classified for decades, PD-59 was signed in July 1980 by President Jimmy Carter "during a period of heightened Cold War tensions due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, greater instability in the Middle East, and earlier strains over China policy, human rights, the Horn of Africa, and Euromissiles".

Putin praises Cold War moles for stealing U.S. nuclear secrets
Reuters ^ | Wed Feb 22, 2012 5:04pm EST | Steve Gutterman

Vladimir Putin praised Cold War-era scientists on Thursday for stealing U.S. nuclear secrets so that United States would not be the world's sole atomic power, in comments reflecting his vision of Russia as a counterweight to U.S. power.

Spies with suitcases full of data helped the Soviet Union build its atomic bomb, he told military commanders.

"You know, when the States already had nuclear weapons and the Soviet Union was only building them, we got a significant amount of information through Soviet foreign intelligence channels," Putin said, according to state-run Itar-Tass.

"The were carrying the information away not on microfilm but literally in suitcases. Suitcases!"

Putin's remarks referred to the dawn of the Cold War more than half a century ago, but they echoed a message he has made loud and clear more recently: that the United States needs to be restrained, and Russia is the country to do it. …

Yeah?

You think it will improve after the election?

On Dec 21, 2012, Obama will have had a little over a month to stew in his humiliating, crushing and unexpected defeat at the hands of the American people.

He’ll still be Commander in Chief.

He’ll still have the nuclear ‘football’. Just sitting there. Staring at him. Taunting him. Daring him. Double-eaten-dog daring him...

Open Mic Catches Obama Asking Medvedev for Space on Missile Defense
March 26, 2012

"In a private conversation about the planned U.S.-led NATO missile defense system in Europe, President Barack Obama asked outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for space on the issue.

This is my last election,” Obama told Medvedev. “After my election I have more flexibility.”

“I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir,” Medvedev said, referring to incoming President Vladimir Putin."

__________________________________________________

Obama was talking with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev when neither of them realized that their conversation was being picked up by microphones. Here is what they said:

Obama: “On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved, but it’s important for him to give me space.”

Medvedev: “Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you ...”

Obama: “This is my last election. After my election, I have more flexibility.”

Medvedev: “I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.”

“This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.” That statement tells us much about the president’s mindset.

The specific mention of missile defense is worrisome enough. Mr. Obama has retreated from the missile defense plan that was negotiated with European allies during the George W. Bush administration. Apparently, he is signaling Moscow that he intends to retreat further. The clear implication from the president’s comments is that he cannot tell the American people before the election what he plans to do after the election.

In addition, there is the phrase “on all these issues,” implying more is at stake than just missile defense.”

Obama To Betray Missile Defense Secrets To Moscow
Investor's Business Daily ^ | January 9, 2012 | IBD staff

Appeasement: From ObamaCare to recess appointments, honoring the Constitution has not been an administration hallmark. But when it comes to betraying secrets to mollify the Russians, it becomes a document the president hides behind.

It was bad enough that the 2012 defense authorization bill signed by President Obama set America on a downward spiral of military mediocrity.

He also issued a signing statement, something he once opposed, saying that language in the bill aimed at protecting top-secret technical data on the U.S. Standard Missile-3 — linchpin of our missile defense — might impinge on his constitutional foreign-policy authority.

Section 1227 of the defense law prohibits spending any funds that would be used to give Russian officials access to sensitive missile-defense technology as part of a cooperation agreement without first sending Congress a report identifying the specific secrets, how they'd be used and steps to protect the data from compromise.

The president is required to certify that any technology shared will not be passed on to third parties such as China, North Korea or Iran, that the Russians will not use transferred secrets to develop countermeasures and that the Russians are reciprocating in sharing missile-defense technology.

I would like to very much know if, buried in the weasel wording of PD-59 is the intent for "Launch On Warning."

This means that, if there is sufficient evidence that the USSR is planning to attack, we Hit the Button. Another thing is that the the Missile Gap that Kennedy won the '60 election with didn't exist.

In fact, when Monster McNamara actually asked to see the true targeting intelligence, he went pale when he found that the Pentagon was having to target small town police stations, just to use all the available delivery systems and warheads.

The Cuban Crisis was because while Khrushchev KNEW he had a pair of deuces to a Spade Royal Flush, he didn't think Kennedy the Goat had the moral courage to actually pull the trigger.

Oh for goodness sake. We had access to this as missileers and it was REALLY sensitive stuff.

What are they going to do next? Release copies of the Reserve Force Target List (RFTL)?

As I recall, Carter re-targeted many U.S. missiles away from Soviet population centers and focused them on command and control bunkers and the shelters of the Soviet hierarchy. This was done in part in a fit of anger over the invasion of Afghanistan when Carter realized his Russian pals were playing him for a dupe. The problem with knocking out c & c sites in the first exchange was that their might not be a Soviet left alive who was senior enough to stop the slaughter.

Romney needs to run an ad based on that scary scenario, something like: He released our nuclear secrets to the world today, will he give our nuclear weapons to our enemies tomorrow? (Requires heavy rewrite.)

Robert McNamara “Secretary of Defense”

Date of Birth Date of Death
(June 9, 1916 – July 6, 2009)

He was Secretary of Defense for John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson during the Vietnam War.

That evil man was of no morality, nor bravery, nor honor, nor moral direction, nor even understanding of right and wrong, caused the death of many of those names on the Black Wall of Granite at the Vietnam Memorial.

He should have been at that wall every day on his knees begging forgiveness. He did not.

THe National Security Archives started out (and might still be) a leftist effort to get U.S. intelligence and strategic military planning secrets declassified (to help the Communists, much as Bill Arkin of the Institute for Policy Studies did in his exposes).

George Washington Un. agreed to house their collection in their Library. The US govt had nothing to do with this arrangement.

The NSArchives used Freedom of Information requests to obtain most of these items and possibly searched the official National Archives for additional materials (which would then have to be declassified by a Mandatory Review process).

Let’s say that this NSA saved the Soviet Union a lot of money in obtaining US military secrets and plans.

Remember the picture of Russian ships at the Democrat convention? Well, in the sky above them - as part of the ‘tribute montage - were Turkish fighter jets. I think the ‘tribute’ to American vets was a raised third finger, Check it out:

I’m with you. Releasing what amounts to a single integrated operational plan for the employment of nuclear weapons will do exceptionally grave damage to our national security. It is impossible to imagine any other outcome. As limited as Obama’s understanding of the military may be, even he must know the consequences of his reckless act.

And at the '08 convention they had huge red (communist?) stars prominently displayed. Clearly meant to send a signal.

Obama's "Uncle Frank" (his communist mentor Frank Marshall Davis) was a diehard supporter of the Soviet Union.

Obama’s Red Mentor Praised Red Army
AIM Report | By Cliff Kincaid | April 30, 2008

Barack Obama’s childhood mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, a member of the Moscow-controlled Communist Party USA (CPUSA), wrote a poem dedicated to the Soviet Red Army. “Smash on, victory-eating Red Army,” he declared. He also wrote poems attacking traditional Christianity and the work of Christian missionaries.

The “Red Army” poem goes beyond hoping for the communists to beat the Nazis in World War II and hails the Soviet revolution. It says:

Show the marveling multitudes
Americans, British, all your allied brothers
How strong you are
How great you are
How your young tree of new unity
Planted twenty-five years ago
Bears today the golden fruit of victory!

Obama’s Communist Mentor
AIM Column | By Cliff Kincaid | February 18, 2008

excerpt...

"through Frank Marshall Davis, Obama had an admitted relationship with someone who was publicly identified as a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). The record shows that Obama was in Hawaii from 1971-1979, where, at some point in time, he developed a close relationship, almost like a son, with Davis, listening to his 'poetry' and getting advice on his career path. But Obama, in his book, Dreams From My Father, refers to him repeatedly as just 'Frank.'

The reason is apparent: Davis was a known communist who belonged to a party subservient to the Soviet Union. In fact, the 1951 report of the Commission on Subversive Activities to the Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii identified him as a CPUSA member. What's more, anti-communist congressional committees, including the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), accused Davis of involvement in several communist-front organizations."

Frank Chapman, a CPUSA supporter, has written a letter to the party newspaper hailing the Illinois senator's victory in the Iowa caucuses:

"Obama’s victory was more than a progressive move; it was a dialectical leap ushering in a qualitatively new era of struggle. Marx once compared revolutionary struggle with the work of the mole, who sometimes burrows so far beneath the ground that he leaves no trace of his movement on the surface. This is the old revolutionary 'mole,' not only showing his traces on the surface but also breaking through."
