Chicago teachers anxious as union meets on contract offer

Chicago teachers were anxious this morning as they walked the picket line for the seventh day, worried whether union officials will decide today to call off the strike that has kept 350,000 students out of the classroom.

"I'm hoping the delegates come to their senses and know that our kids need us," Mary Silva, a CPS social worker, said outside school headquarters.

The Chicago Teachers Union's House of Delegates is to meet at 3 p.m. to go over a tentative contract reached during marathon negotiations last week. It could decide to end the strike while a ratification vote is taken among teachers in the next few weeks.

If the strike is not called off, a Cook County judge will consider a request from CPS and Mayor Rahm Emanuel to order teachers back to work. That hearing is Wednesday.

"The mayor beating us to the punch is going to look very negative for us," said Silva, who added that she spoke to a few House of Delegates members who said they may decide against halting the walk-out, as they did during a meeting on Sunday.

"I feel that we need to vote today to get back into the classroom and let tomorrow be getting back to the classroom, getting back to work and not having the mayor do what he wants to do – the injunction," Silva said.

I hope they turn it down! This would be an improvement for Chicago education!

So... if the individual union members disagree with the union representatives who disagree with union leadership who negotiate on their behalf, why “collectively bargain”? That’s the same same deal I have with much less expense and BS.

I wonder if they’ll be getting their 30% raise over 4 years or no performance reviews or both.

Wow. The Chicago teachers’ union squaring off against the Little Ballerina. I don’t know who I want to lose worse on this issue. Both, I hope...

College suspends professor for allegedly attempting to force students to vote for Obama

A college professor has been placed on leave after she allegedly forced her class to sign a pledge to vote for President Obama in the upcoming elections.

Early last week Professor Sharon Sweet at Brevard Community College (BCC) allegedly told students to sign a pledge that reads: “I pledge to vote for President Obama and Democrats up and down the ticket.”

The pledge was printed off of GottaVote.org, a website funded by the Obama campaign.

University administrators said they learned about the incident late Thursday afternoon and launched an investigation, after they received a phone call from a concerned parent.

“Based on the allegations, Associate Professor Sweet has requested, and been granted, a leave of absence without pay effective immediately,” reads a statement put out by John Glisch, Associate Vice President for Communications at BCC.

“The college will continue its investigation into the matter, which will include interviews with all students in her class,” continues the statement.

Sweet’s actions may have also violated Florida’s election laws.

Section 104.31, of Title IX in chapter 104, states that “no officer or employee of the state... shall... use his or her official authority or influence for the purpose of interfering with an election or nomination of officer or influencing another person’s vote or affecting the result thereof.”

Lake Forest High in session despite strike "Despite a teachers strike, Lake Forest High School opened Monday with certified teachers, non-certified teacher assistants and community volunteers.

It is unclear whether the school session will be recognized as an official attendance day by the state. Lake County Regional Superintendent of Schools Roycealee Wood will find out from the state if the day was official.

Wood called the effort by District 115 as “precedent setting.”

“It’s a very impressive school and very impressive programming,” she said.

“Is it a good idea? Yes. But does it meet the requirements put forward in state code? That is yet to be determined.”

Among the criteria, the state requires that more than half of students enrolled be present for the day to be considered an official day of instruction and on Monday school attendance was at 82 percent, officials said. The school has 1,718 students."........................

It’s a game of give away and take away. The first offer was 16% over 4 years with test scores being 40% of teacher evaluations. Yesterday it was 7% over 4 years with test scores being 30% of teacher evaluations. They’re just going in circles.
