Many times the Secret Service agents use plain clothes for agents who circulate in the crowd, away from the rope lines and out on the perimeter of events for layered security.
Depending on the event, perimeter agents often wear casual clothing to blend in.
Campaign events involving Obama, agents occasionally wear clown suits, appears as union organizers, protestors, while others might appear as long haired bearded bikers.

That was what I thought was laughable when I saw Romney here in Nashua 2 weeks ago. The SS guys in plainclothes were so obvious. They all had that ex military look. Like I said, one had on a Hawiain shirt. The other two looked like they had just come off the golf course.
The Romney event was at a minor league baseball stadium. They had a guy dressed like the one in the Obama event picture out in the outfield along each foul ball line. They were casually dressed like the guy supposedly relieving himself in the picture. More likey the guy is just looking out at the sector that he was incharge of watching. Each agent is assigned a certain area to watch. He is not concerned with what is behind him. He is watching the perimiter. You have to go through a metal detector and have an invitation to get into one of these events.

On a serious note, is there anyone out here who thinks they would a allow some guy to wander around all by his lonesome, behind the president, on high ground, with a line of sight to POTUS, just outside the campaign/speech venue?

BTW, SS will also use cleared/screened LEO's to work with the SS in some venues.
