FROM THE EDITOR: I was a gun show virgin(AZ)
gvnews.com ^ | 18 September, 2012 | Dan Shearer

My first recollection involving a real gun was when I was about 8 years old and Dad took us boys out to a pasture in Minnesota with a 12-gauge.

One of the brothers was smart. He brought along two washcloths and packed them under his shirt to absorb the kick. He didn’t share, so the rest of us nearly had our arms ripped off when we pulled the trigger. I declined Dad’s offer for another go at it, and it was a while before I shot another gun.

I don’t mind guns, and even considered getting one when we moved here until I realized it’s the big city — from whence we came — where you’d more likely need the extra security. Alas, we ended up in Rancho Sahuarita, so we’ve opted to spread Lego pieces across the carpet to deter intruders.

So far, so good.

Even though I’m not in the market, however, I did take the opportunity Saturday to cash in on a free pass to a gun show at the county fairgrounds. It was my first.

A gun show (like an “Occupy” rally) is a great lesson in stereotypes. Bear with me as I reinforce some, blow up others, and have fun with the rest. And that’s the operative word your first time at a gun show: Fun. (That’s if you don’t take it all too seriously.)

First impressions

I was standing at a table full of handguns pretending I knew what I was looking at when I heard a young lady to my right say, “How does this look on me?”

I glanced over and there she was, arm held out in front of her, looking at a set of brass knuckles like it was a diamond ring.

Interesting look into the mind of a person from outside the gun culture.

Overall, it was not too bad, but it is hard to overcome the condencension that seems to permeate the authors attitude. I would give Dan a B+ for his attempt at being evenhanded. It seem as "chickified" an article as I have seen in a while, though. Too bad his first experience with a firearm seemed to cause some mild hoplophobia. Start new shooters with a .22!

I moved on to the bumper stickers, and you’ll want to skip this part if you’re a Democrat:
How will Democrats stand up to terrorism when they can’t even face Fox News?”

That was pretty damn funny!

Dad was stupid. You don't start kid off with a shoulder cannon. Start them with a single shot .22. That will teach them patience in aiming and taking their shot, because they have to re-load after every shot. It's not too loud and there's not too much recoil.

The fact that the author was put off guns for years shows how stupid Dad was, if that wasn't his goal.

“But you can’t escape the fact that a gun that looks like a toy will likely be treated as one.”

The fact? Another leftie “fact” gets pulled out of the place where the sun don’t shine.

BS....who gives a 12ga to an 8 year old as their first shot?

My first shot was with a .22LR bolt action Winchester. Easy, fun and created a lifetime of love with guns

it's a common opinion, but not a fact. fortunately i don't have to worry about it. i took my 9 year old daughter to the local gun show, and she curled up her nose at all the pink guns and asked me, "daddy, why would anyone want one of those? they're ugly"

I’d give him a flat F.
Most conservatives have read at least through the 10th Amendment and still wonder what the heck happened to it.

Oh, my daughters were both dab hands with the 1911 by the time they were 8 :).

Just let the kids set their own speed.

Since 2008, I have noticed a lot more liberals and Democrats at the range and at gun shows.

Quite a few bought a small handgun for “protection” and found that once the gun bug bit them, they couldn't stop. One guy I work with was a big Obama supporter, and now has two AR’s and is saving for a nice .338 Lapua.

Once the issue becomes non partisan, we win.

Maybe dad realized that his son was poffer and should not have anything to do with guns, so he made sure that hw would leave them alone. /s

You are correct. Once the Constitution becomes taken seriously, we start to restore it. Progressivism is an ugly mental disease.

Same here. It was on Grandpa’s small farm in Idaho. He had a no-name .22LR bolt action made in 1908. The extractor was worn and didn’t always extract spent cartridges, but it was great fun shooting snapping turtles in the farm pond with Dad and Grandpa from up on an adjacent hill. He later gave me that rifle and I mounted a scope on it and sharpened the extractor so it worked well. My buds and I got great fun with it in college on the Missouri River bottoms south of Columbia. I think Dad sold it a garage sale when they downsized to a condo around 1990.

These things tend to draw a more conservative crowd, many of whom haven’t read the Constitution beyond the Second Amendment.

Which is 2 amendments and a preamble more than any democrat I know!

Not stupid, if Dad wanted sons to stay away from guns for a few years.

Have you ever heard of Dad stories where the son gets caught trying to smoke cigarettes for the first time, so he makes the son sit there and smoke the whole pack, until he vomits?

The same with chewing tobacco. And don’t spout laws.

It is entirely possible the father was thinking of his son(s) for those times when he was not at home to watch what the were doing at that young age.
