More Americans than forecast filed applications for unemployment benefits last week, adding to concern the labor market is slackening.
Jobless claims decreased by 3,000 in the week ended Sept. 15 to 382,000, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 49 economists surveyed by Bloomberg projected 375,000.
Looming tax increases and government spending cuts slated to take effect next year, should lawmakers fail to act, may block any pickup in hiring following last months smaller-than-projected gain in payrolls. The Federal Reserve last week undertook a third round of asset purchases in a bid to reduce joblessness that has held above 8 percent for more than three years.
The problems are more on the hiring side than the layoffs side, said Ryan Sweet, a senior economist at Moodys Analytics Inc. in West Chester, Pennsylvania, who projected a rise to 385,000 claims. If they panic and start cutting workers, that would raise an immediate red flag because layoffs would be a recipe for another recession.
**SNIP**
The unemployment rate unexpectedly dropped to 8.1 percent in August from 8.3 percent as more Americans left the labor force, the payrolls report also showed earlier this month. The jobless rate has been stuck above 8 percent since February 2009, the longest stretch in monthly records going back to 1948.

More....Than Forecast = Unexpected
We really need to do something about the corrupt news media.
Given a choice, I would strongly prefer a sack of natural fertilizer to an anti-Semitic communist. At least that would produce nice flowers.

I found the line our local paper will lead with:
“The unemployment rate unexpectedly dropped to 8.1 percent in August from 8.3 percent”
Last month, with reports every news channel had to admit were a disaster, my paper did that. Guess where? FL. And that’s why Romney is struggling here. Because the papers here function for the DNC. FL has HORRID papers - really bad. We are where NY Times reporters retire.
Comparing Apples to Apples, the figure was UNCHANGED. Last week they reported 382,000 new claims. This week they reported 382,000 new claims. They are reporting a “decrease” of 3000 only because they revised last week up by 3000 to 385,000! And if they could, they would tell us this was all because of the Movie ;-)
why is this unexpected them?
but we have expected this from day 1... The minute this guy started in the big oil, big bankers and the wealty a month after elected... we saw this..
actually we all knew if from “fundemental transformation of this society”... and “spread the wealth around”... “clining to guns and religion”...etc.

Wow, even the Chronicle is getting it right.
Ergo the adage- “Expect the Unexpected.”

I guess the headline writers got tired of overusing "unexpected".
If the 0bama regime remains in power, pretty soon it will be rarity to find someone who is working. Heck everyone else has dropped out of the workforce!

Hmmmmm.. but what has caused this dropping out of the workforce??..Lack of opportunities, lack of skills, over dependency of entitlements? IMHO societys provided temporary safety net has evolved into a permanent comfy hammock.

Hard Unemployment Truths About 'Soft' Skills (many applicants fail drug tests, lack work ethic)
At a recent dinner in Washington, D.C., with representatives from major American manufacturing companies, I listened as the talk turned to how hard it is to find qualified applicants for jobs."What exactly are the skills you can't find?" I asked, imagining that openings for high-tech positions went begging because, as we hear so often, the training of the U.S. workforce doesn't match up well with current corporate needs.
One of the representatives looked sheepishly around the room and responded: "To be perfectly honest . . . we have a hard time finding people who can pass the drug test." Several other reps gave a knowing nod. Applicants were often so under qualified, they said, that simply finding someone who could properly answer the telephone was sometimes a challenge.
They’ve dropped out of the workforce because there are no jobs and being counted as “unemployed” may hurt Hussein’s stats and image, so voila! they are no longer in the workforce; and I am not just talking about low level jobs.
