U.S. names 55 Gitmo prisoners cleared to go

By JOSH GERSTEIN | 9/21/12 1:44 PM EDT

The U.S. Government has for the first time issued a public list of Guantanamo prisoners cleared for release or transfer, but who remain at the island prison because of difficulties finding a country willing to take them or because of concerns about sending them to their home countries.

The list (posted here) was filed in a series of federal court cases Friday morning and includes the names and serial numbers of 55 detainees. That's almost exactly one-third of the 167 men currently imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay.

A significant number of the men are believed to be Yemeni. President Barack Obama suspended further transfers to Yemen in January 2010 over concerns that some prisoners sent their for further detention had escaped.

Since 2009, the U.S. Government has kept under wraps the list of detainees approved for release. In a court filing back then (posted here), the State Department's envoy for Guantanamo, Ambassador Daniel Fried, cited a need to coordinate diplomatic efforts to resettle the war-on-terror prisoners.

However, in the new court filings Friday, Justice Department lawyers said that need no longer merited keeping the list secret. They didn't quite concede that the resettlement process has stalled, but that was the implication. Congress has also greatly complicated releases from Guantanamo with a series of legislative measures attached to budget bills that Obama signed into law.

Were the 55 inside the shuttle today as it went through California maybe getting thrown one at a time out a door while being flown around?
That would have probably been the most proper end to some of those Gitmo gems.

Folks, this instantly makes them too dangerous to release.

They ARE NOT fit to release, and this information makes that blatantly clear.

The timing couldn’t be worse. We just had a ex-detainee participate in a terrorist operation.

Now Obama wants fifty-five more of those folks on the street.

This is a sure way to create a whole new block of al Qaeda donors and voters for Obama.

Timing?

It's like laughing in our faces regarding the death of an American Ambassador, possibly at the hands of a similarly released animal. I also fully expect Omuslim to thumb his nose at everybody & release the Blind Sheik over all objections.

Great way to teach them a lesson. You kill our ambassador, we release your fellow terrorists.

I’m sure he’s going to release the Blind Sheik.

But the question is why he is doing this.

Is he (a) superconfident of his reelection, knowing that whatever he does, people are ignorant and are not going to vote against him and he’s a sure thing?

Or is he (b) pretty sure he won’t be reelected, and just trying to get his licks in now?

In either case, expect the Blind Sheik and a whole lot of others to be released soon.

Are they giving them rifles and ammunition to take with them?

“...difficulties finding a country willing to take them...”

Okay. I declare myself a sovereign country; will accept all 55 of them; will execute them immediately after arrival. Declare war on me, America (”Mouse That Roared”), defeat me, send me millions/billions in war reparations.

Ready for the next shipment. Lather, rinse, repeat, as necessary with all terrorists.

How bout this ? If nobody will take them, they shouldn’t be released.

He’s importing Muslims like there is no tomorrow, plus he has the border with Mexico wide open. He should just put a welcome mat out in Texas.
