Harry Reid calmly responds to Romney’s tax release: “He’s hiding something. He’s hiding something!”

Reid’s original claim, of course, wasn’t that Romney was “hiding something” but that a Bain investor had told him Romney hadn’t paid income tax at all for 10 years. We found out a few hours ago that that’s not true if your 10-year window includes 2011, and if you believe PricewaterhouseCoopers, it’s not true for the period from 1990-2009, when he paid an average annual effective rate of 20.2 percent.

Time for an apology, or time to move the goalposts? Longtime Reid-watchers know the answer. From a Las Vegas Sun reporter:

“Harry Reid is also a Mormon. Why can’t Harry Reid say anything nice about a Republican Mormon?”

As a 72 year-old life-long Mormon, I am preparing to ask to have my name removed from the Mormon Church as a member. Here we have one of the most despicable men of our time, claiming membership in good standing in the Mormon Church, while the church leaders are all hiding under their desks up in Salt Lake City! Our local Ward here in California can’t understand why they have not taken steps to excommunicate Reld because his behavior is at odds with many doctrines of the faith. I’ve had it! If they allow this POS to be a member in good standing, I want no part of it! I guess like a lot of things, this is not your father’s Mormon Church!

To the stooge from Reid’s office analyzing the posts: Your guy Reid is, too understate, not well liked. He is a liar. (I will not use obscenities such as “simpering little f** liar” because then you can discount our comments as ill tempered, etc. In stone cold common sense observation: advise him to resign.

That’s down quite a bit from the $1.7 million he reported in 2010.

I think Reid’s flipping out because he got played by Romney in a rope-a-dope/briar-patch sense. And knows it.

Romney gives 30% of his income to charity, paying 14% in taxes. That’s 44% of his income going out the door, and that IS the story here.

The release yesterday was deliberately timed to get the information into the news for the Friday evening news cycle in a way that would limit editorializing and prevent a quick response from the Obama Campaign - which will carry it into and through the weekend.

Reid’s initial attacks worked to Romney’s advantage - putting focus on the issue and allowing Romney to blow the accusations out of the water at a time/place of his own choosing.

If people go back through my postings here they’ll find that I’m not a big Romney fan, but I’ve wanted to give the guy a fair shake - especially from a campaign mechanics standpoint. What he and his campaign did yesterday was ... impressive. It’ll be more so if they can sustain and build the charitable-giving aspect of the narrative into next week, because it shows the fecklessness and emphasis on government handouts/dependency of the Democrats.

Should add something here.

I'm not sure that Reid was really "lying" in his comments about Romney's taxes. He didn't say that he knew Romney didn't pay any ... he said that he'd been told by someone at Bain that Romney didn't pay them.

I think that Reid may have been goat-f*cked** here. That someone from Bain really DID tell him that Romney didn't pay any taxes and Reid just ran with the charge without thinking through the possibility that he was being set up.

Yeah, if that's what happened and I was Harry Reid I'd be flipping out right now too.

(**Mods, pls excuse language, but I think it conveys perfectly what may have happened to a VERY deserving guy).

Heh, heh, heh.

If that's true, and I hope it is, then the detestable Reid has high-speed screws in the water and his sonar watch is napping at their stations. :-)
