Battle in Benghazi as crowds attack militia blamed for US diplomat's death

Fierce fighting broke out on Friday night after crowds trying to storm the Benghazi base of a militia blamed for the death of US ambassador Chris Stevens came under fire.

Earlier in the evening protesters calling for an end to militia rule had stormed the headquarters of the Islamic Ansar al-Sharia brigade in the city, setting fire to buildings after pushing past guards who fired in the air.

But the protesters ran into a hail of fire when they moved south to storm a much larger secondary base of the militia, whose members are accused of the attack on the US consulate that left Stevens and three other diplomats dead.

Machine-gun fire burst out as the demonstrators tried to enter the compound, a former base of Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

Later there was pandemonium as police and army vehicles jostled with civilian cars and ambulances trying to get the wounded through traffic to hospital.

Sirens, screams, car horns and the rattle of heavy machine-gun fire filled the air, with long bursts of fiery red tracer fired from inside the base going over the heads of panicked protesters.

Hours earlier, Benghazi had been quiet, its people toasting the peaceful end of a rally that saw 20,000 people gather in the city centre to demand an end to militia violence.

Same old story. I remember a few “peace marches” in Lebenon.

They always end with bombs and assassinations, and the most ruthless prevail.

Curiouser and curiouser.

Erosion of the official Obama party line on this atrocity.

yeah, not all Germans were Nazis but they didn’t fight it hard enough, or maybe take it seriously and one day they woke up and they had no choice. That’s the fear. Still, this took some serious guts, IMO.

20,000 people demanding an end to militia violence.

God bless the innocent and the upright.

I hope the protesters are successful in booting the militias for their sake.

They always end with bombs and assassinations, and the most ruthless prevail.

And we don't even know who these people are. I do know that the area where these people live sent more suicide bombers to Iraq than any other area of the muslim world.

Seems to me that cheering for these "peace protesters" is about as bright as launching a war in Libya without knowing who your allies are. On the other hand the "Freedom protesters" in Cairo had plenty of FR support as well.

Good on those Libyans, who are obviously seeking a better life, and who are plainly our friends.

My question about this is: why did this crowd even have a base to attack? Why didn’t we flatten it a week ago? I know the answer, but I thought that this issue needs to be discussed.

The Administration had no intention of telling those people that they had been deceived by their own “brotherhood”. Its not consistent with the Obama ass kissing Mideast policy.

sorry, but if they are getting shot protesting the violence, it isn’t much of a leap to figure out they are not the same. As I previously said about the Nazis, these are the ones who are taking it seriously and fighting it before it no longer matters that they are moderate. We are not talking about giving them arms or money, but we can sure as hell cheer them on.

And, when did he willfully ignore it?

With intelligence sources confirming details, there is a gathering storm for Obama.

I have no doubts of Paul Ryan and the other guy winning the election, but, I’m thinking this, and any further revelations, will make this a landslide of epic proportions.

Look, good question. I do however think it’s a great thing that they have been able to do so. My first instinct would have been to retaliate. We probably didn’t know at first who had taken the action though, so cooler heads may have been a good idea for once.

The fact that Libyans have made it patently clear they are sick of this s—t, sends a message that is loud and clear, and may be better than something we could have done.

We should probably make it clear we are happy to have friends in Libya who share dismay at our loss. We should promote the shared things that we have in common, and seek to promote those sorts of relations.

We should also thank the government for it’s expressions of sorrow, even if we don’t fully buy it. There are ways to move minds that don’t involve threats or retaliation. And I’m quite a hawk when it gets right down to it.
