GOP retreat on taxes likely if Obama wins [higher taxes to save Pentagon from cuts]

Senior Republicans say they will be forced to retreat on taxes if President Obama wins a second term in November, clearing the biggest obstacle to a deal with Democrats to defuse a year-end budget bomb that threatens to rock the U.S. economy.

... in the Senate, ... even some ardent conservatives say Republicans may have no choice but to throw in the towel on taxes if they want to persuade Democrats to spare the Pentagon budget.

“We’re not going to save our defense unless we go along with the president’s wishes to raise taxes on small business,” said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), a leader of the tea party movement. “It’s not a good choice. I would never support it. . . . [But] there are enough Republicans, I think, who are so afraid of defense cuts that they would probably give in.”

Since that is what RINOs do, what will have changed in the RINO herd around the Capitol?

or better yet, less government. Raising taxes is probably more dangerous than the military cuts IMHO. We need policies that create real economic growth, not stop gap tax increases that get us to the next debt level increase debate. AFAIC, I’m Taxed Enough Already. Make the spending cuts.

Why bother with taxes anyway? The government can simply print more money.

If Obama wins again, it would be because that is where the American people are, unfortunately. The result would be that many Republicans would go soft, because the only thing that would come out of fighting for Republican values is to be turned out on their rear from the American voter.

Having said that, I think most Americans are more Republican than Democrat and, hopefully, the vote in November reflects that.

The taxes automatically all go up as with the spending cuts.

I have thought this for a long time. Unlike 2 years earlier late 2010, Obama will be able to afford higher taxes because he is not up for election again. He will be able to take a hard stand on which taxes are re-cut then claim he cut the Bush deficit he inherited. It will be tough to listen to.

Well, the R party House passed those cuts last year. No one in white hats here.

If we tax to raise more revenue, much of the money will go to welfare and entitlement programs. We are already having the historical battle that takes place during the decline of great powers—guns vs butter and butter wins every time because it has more constituents. The US can’t afford both. We already borrow 42 cents of every federal dollar spent.

If they print much more, the banks will start charging you interest for keeping your money in their vault. It’s about come to that already actually.

They were INTENDING to point out how Obama’s re-election means HIGHER TAXES.

But the liberal news outlet and RINO yammering makes it sound like a retreat. Well, both are likely true.

Obama wins, and the RINOs will sell out. Even a nominal majority will not be enough. This is proof enough that the excuse that “oh, GOP will stop Obama so we dont need Romney” is completely wrong.

Also, I am aghast that we will let more defense spending overriding the need for fiscal responsibility and stopping the raping of the American taxpayer. This is bizarre and dumb.

Not probably, definitely. It will definitely hurt our economy and will definitely feed Obama’s leviathan government while stopping real reform by cutting spending.

If these RINO clowns cant cut a $700b DOD at a time when our engagements are winding DOWN, then how can we expect them to close a $1 trillion deficit?

“AFAIC, I’m Taxed Enough Already. Make the spending cuts.”

Agreed.

It takes a very simple minded person to not be able to see that obama is intentionally trying to destroy this nation. I guess all those elected republicans are simple minded. Of course, they all love their perks and won’t do one thing that may jeopardize them.

I know a few wealthy people that are probably starting to wish they had listened to us right about now. It will be interesting. Luckily I’m hedged six ways to Sunday so bring it on.

The Boehner's in congress could care less who the President is. They love their elite power "club", regardless who is in charge.

The best Executive Order would be for immediate term limits for these career hacks...since they'll never vote for that themselves.

wait a minute, i couldve sworn that *somebody* in the leadership insisted that the only reason [he] they voted *for* those defense cuts, was to gain leverage to force the dims to negotiate a tradeoff in welfare cuts...

you mean to tell me that the dims are now unwilling to cut their own pork and vote buying dollars ???

man im sure glad these leaders are there to navigate these smokey backroom deals for us, or we mightve gotten screwed...

I think you hit the nail on the head right there. If they can’t cut the DOD budget when we’re drawing down two wars, it’s got nothing to do with national security needs, our government as a whole is just plain committed to excessive spending.
