Libyan Islamist militia swept out of Benghazi bases

BENGHAZI, Libya, Sept 22 (Reuters) - An Islamist militia was driven out of the city of Benghazi early on Saturday in a surge of anger against the armed groups that control large parts of Libya more than a year after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.

A spokesman for Ansar al-Sharia, which some U.S. and Libya officials blame for the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi last week in which the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed, said it had evacuated its bases "to preserve security in the city".

In a dramatic sign of Libya's fragility, after sweeping through Ansar's bases the crowd went on to attack a pro-government militia, believing them to be Islamists, triggering an armed response in which at least 11 people were killed and more than 60 wounded.

The invasion of Ansar al-Sharia's compounds, which met little resistance, appeared to be part of a sweep of militia bases by police, troops and activists following a large demonstration against militia units in Benghazi on Friday.

Demonstrators pulled down militia flags and set a vehicle on fire inside what was once the base of Gaddafi's security forces.

Hundreds of men waving swords and even a meat cleaver chanted "Libya, Libya", "No more al Qaeda!" and "The blood we shed for freedom shall not go in vain!"

"After what happened at the American consulate, the people of Benghazi had enough of the extremists," demonstrator Hassan Ahmed said.

"They did not give allegiance to the army. So the people broke in and they fled.

"This place is like the Bastille. This is where Gaddafi controlled Libya from, and then Ansar al-Sharia took it over. This is a turning point for the people of Benghazi."

Seems everything is done in a fit of anger. How do they plan picnics? Just get real POd and suddenly decide to swoop down on a park somewhere and start eating everything in sight?

Be careful what you wish for for others. Ask the dead ambassador.

Please don’t equate the treachery that saw a man that tried to do good things for Libyans as well has United States citizen slaughtered, with the death of the likes of a man that ordered a 747 chuck full of people to be blown out of the sky at altitude.

You do see a moral difference right? Seriously!

Khadaffy was a mass murderer.

He was a mass murderer who had been turned into a US asset. His murder at the hands of NATO, State Department, ICC, UN Al Quaeda et al just proved to the world that cooperation with the US is suicidal. The dead ambassador was in the thick of that putsch, sowed the wind, and reaped the whirlwind. Our intermeddling in Libyan affairs killed far more than the airline atrocity, and will continue to do so.

Like the dead ambassador, the US sows the wind.

“Man bites dog”

As noted above, the militias simply bugged out. If they had thought this was a real counterjihad they would have killed as many “apostates” as they could.

Too neat, too simple. Sorry, not buying.

The first rule of assassination - assassinate the assassins.

It seems to be in full force here.

Rubbish.
Roughly 8 out of 10 are alqaeda types, even if not called alqaeda. Gotta define what is meant by alqaeda.

All this is theater played out by useful idiots being whipped into frenzy by the propaganda machine

It sure looks like ambassador Stevens was killed by a mercenary force doing a contract for Obama and Hillary, The leader of the force was released from gitmo by Eric Holder in '07

The original event supposedly caused by the "infidel" movie was a diversion created by our administration to make it look like a mob did it

according to reports, there was no mob

only a small team of assasins

It appears that Kaddaffy was taken out by a US backed mercenary force so that the EU could secure the Libyan treasury without protest to the UN or allies by Kaddaffy.

Ambassador Stevens was ordered taken out by that same mercenary force because he knew all the specific details and Stevens was a loose end Obama and Hillary needed to tidy up before the Nov election

Sounds like an early Mel Gibson movie.

The only sound conclusion is: “things are really messed-up there.”

I stand by the U.S. Marines and the good men of the armed forces who took out Hussein in ‘03. I stand by the removal of Khadafy in ‘11. Long live freedom.

There is no American aid to Libya. It does not need it because of the oil.

Getting rid of the “Colonel” was a big mistake. This was a defanged dog and not even barking. Instead we have unleashed rabid pit bulls.

But what can you expect from The Disaster?

Don’t forget the freeing from prison of those who ultimately led the insurrection six months or so before its outbreak.

Morality is only one dimension of politics and Quacky had been neutered. A few years back we assisted another mass murderer (a much bigger one BTW) try and kill Iranians. Some years before that we allied with the biggest mass murderer in history to beat the second biggest.

Quacky had become an asset. It was a mistake to remove him.
Mubarak (sp) was an even bigger mistake.
