Small government and free-market capitalism are about to get put to the test in Honduras, where the government has agreed to let an investment group build an experimental city with no taxes on income, capital gains or sales.

Proponents say the tiny, as-yet unnamed town will become a Central American beacon of job creation and investment, by combining secure property rights with minimal government interference.

“Once we provide a sound legal system within which to do business, the whole job creation machine – the miracle of capitalism – will get going,” Michael Strong, CEO of the MKG Group, which will build the city and set its laws, told FoxNews.com.

Strong said that the agreement with the Honduran government states that the only tax will be on property.

“Our goal is to be the most economically free entity on Earth,” Strong said

It is near or at a deep-water port. Close to Roatán Island. Good location for a new Hong Kong or Singapore. If it were me, I would hire Disney Imagineering to help with city design.

Friedmanville is the name. Says minimal taxes not none, that is where the police come from. Fire departments were voluntary for decades in the U.S. and ambulance would be pay as you go.

In NYC, city police services weren't established until 1845. They seemed to do ok.

I prefer elected sheriffs and sworn militia (as required).

I believe that the private company that manages the city will provide all services and will collect property taxes to pay for it. They probably also own all the land and will earn money selling the lots.

“If it were me, I would hire Disney Imagineering to help with city design.”

Good idea. Reminds me of my close bud who works for Universal Studios design team which includes the roller coaster rides. They went once to Shanghai and the Chinese local govt wanted Superman, Mickey Nouse etc. My bud said “Excuse me, but those are trademarked and copyrighted..” The Chinese locals looked at each other and the translator said “trademark? What is that?” And people kept asking why the Chinese are experts at stealing stuff and making crappy stuff.....

Not a fair test. Kind of like trying to grow straberries on asphalt... High levels of corruption, crime, drug cartel activity, worst homicide rate in the hemisphere. If the experiment fails, I don't want to hear leftists saying, "See, capitalism doesn't work."

I predict that it will be a phenomenal success therefor it will most likely be the most hated and despised place on Earth. Wish we could do that here in the U.S.

I predict that once it is a success some commie future president of that country will seize it all and redistribute it to the poor.

It’s what commies do best, grab the stuff others built (especially infrastructure) and live off it till it turns to dust, then try and lure back the investors to rebuild so they can repeat the process.

San Pedro Sula is nearby and is currently one of the leading cities in the world for the incidence of murders, mostly drug related. I foresee problems for this utopia being planned; maybe they will name it Obamastan.

If the current government is doing so bad that a nearby city is one of the leading cities for murder... How much worse can free market capitalism do?
