BERLIN – Germany has launched a war crimes investigation against an 87-year-old Philadelphia man it accuses of serving as an SS guard at the Auschwitz death camp, The Associated Press has learned, following years of failed U.S. Justice Department efforts to have the man stripped of his American citizenship and deported.
Johann "Hans" Breyer, a retired toolmaker, admits he was a guard at Auschwitz during World War II, but told the AP he was stationed outside the facility and had nothing to do with the wholesale slaughter of some 1.5 million Jews and others behind the gates.
The special German office that investigates Nazi war crimes has recommended that prosecutors charge him with accessory to murder and extradite him to Germany for trial on suspicion of involvement in the killing of at least 344,000 Jews at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in occupied Poland.
The AP also has obtained documents that raise doubts about Breyer's testimony about the timing of his departure from Auschwitz.

I don’t either. Severe human weakness in some cases, I think. There were some heroes made at that time saving many Jews and other ‘undesirables,’ too many we probably don’t even know about, but not enough took that road. When someone believes that they’re ‘only one man’ (or woman or child) and what could they possibly do to leave their mark (good or bad)....you can come back to this atrocity in mankind and point to both good and evil examples.

Not only that. He would have smelled the horrific smell of hundreds of thousands of bodies being burned. Just as the people who lived in the surrounding area would have also smelled it....and done nothing.
The smell of a rotting corpse is unmistakable. I can still recall the time (I was about 9 or 10), when I was exposed to the smell of a murdered body placed into the trunk of a car which was abandoned on a major highway across the street from my father’s shop. The smell was awful, and that was just from ONE body.
Back then, I don’t think even the democrats would have admired him.

Really? It's still happening today. It wouldn't take much for Muslims to eradicate Christians in their countries. Rwanda is another. The Germans just made it a sophisticated endeavor.
The SS guards used to joke that Auschwitz was the place where ‘’the Jews come in the gate and go out the chimney’’. Till the day I die I’ll never understand how the German people and others went along with this.

I wish, and don’t understand why they haven’t (money/power aside).
We are running out of Nazi war criminals, what are we going to do next? Nothing like the “Nazi war crimes” had occurred before or since!
