Documentary Review: Dinesh D'Souza Unsuccessfully Reaches With 2016
Forbes ^ | 09/24/2012 | John Tamny

While in college one of my good friends had a basic, American sounding name something like (name is changed to avoid embarrassing the real person) Charlie Palmer. Charlie had a father who was born and raised in Memphis, and who had a southern accent, and then his mother was of Colombian descent. Charlie would talk about his Colombian heritage on occasion, but it in no obvious way defined him.

Fast forward roughly five years, Charlie has drifted from his friends as college friends often do after graduation, yet somehow I heard that he was a first year law student at a Midwestern university. The only difference was that formerly all American, fraternity party attending Charlie Palmer was now Charles Palmer-Gonzalez, a foreign law student in a strange land mingling solely with other students who’d matriculated from around the world. I knew this because a close friend of mine was in Charlie’s class.

I was reminded of Palmer’s evolution while watching Dinesh D’Souza’s documentary on President Obama, 2016. D’Souza arrived at Dartmouth in the late ‘70s, and soon joined a foreign students’ association that included not a few Americans utterly fascinated by and eager to spend time with their fellow classmates from foreign locales.

As the above applies to Obama, it’s impossible to know for certain, but my own guess is that having had a very American upbringing in 1970s Hawaii (parents who weren’t terribly interested in him a truism of the “Me Decade”), Obama by the college and law school years realized that it would be advantageous to play up his foreign background which included a Kenyan father who abandoned him not long after he was born, and a mother who took him to live with her in Indonesia until the 5th grade,

The film is a good vehicle for describing how BO got his worldview. I thought it was decent.

Please provide some commentary. The title is foggy at best.

If it means the author doesn’t think D’Souza did a good job, then the author is a rare liberal employed by Forbes and is an idiot.

If it means D’Souza isn’t reaching enough people, then it’s time to go to video NOW!!! As the purpose I hope is to save America, and I hope D’Souza realizes that.

Example: Saturday, it was uploaded to YouTube...before it was pulled, I was viewer #865. When I was done, 87 minutes later, it was up to 13,500 or so. Then it was pulled. It needs to go viral NOW.

Some of these articles with the possibly-real, possibly-apocryphal intros are more blah than blog.

There’s no reason they can’t introduce their basic premise in the introductory paragraph.

Agreed. I overlooked the title, and gave the author three paragraphs to get going in some direction.

He failed. So I’ll go look for another article!

Sounds like the author is another lefty of sorts. He apparently wrote a previous article suggesting that Milton Friedman had changed his philosophy in later life and repudiated monetarism.

I saw 2016. I don't think D’Souza is reaching at all.

D’Souza did a very good job with the video. Did he answer all the questions about Obama, no that wasn't the vision behind the film. He did presented a theory as well as general factual information that was designed to make you think and to make you decide.

Any information as to why YouTube pulled the video? Did Vimeo illicitly make it available? I was curious why the film’s producers/studio would undercut their box office take by putting it up for free on YouTube.

Maybe most telling was the short segment on Obama’s brother George.

I thought D’Souza’s film was dead on.

Who are you going to believe? Your own ears or something dashed off by a lefty writer. The premises in the movie are based on Obama’s own words, reading his autobiography (who wrote it is another story.)

If you want to catch a magician, watch the hands. With Obama, watch what he does, not what he says. He wants to destroy manufacturing in the US with regulation and taxation. We will still mine coal, but we will ship it to China where they will make electricity and steel. He will effectively “share the wealth” with the world and tear the US down to the level of an underdeveloped country.

This guy is just another dipsh*t Libertarian. Another one of Obama’s useful idiots. We have some of them here at FR. They say Obama won’t be so bad in a second term, and Romney would be worse. They sound like a bunch of parrots.

it’s very much the norm for left leaning students to emerge from the high schools of the elite... Obama strikes this writer as yet another utopian, adult-adolescent liberal of the American variety; his views commonplace within the Democratic party that he leads.

I'd have to agree.

Hawaii, a hotbed of Honkeydom?

Ask the Howlies (Haole).

Obama's American upbringing is evidenced by the way he throws a baseball.

Oh my goodness, yes! This author's mealy-mouthed, self indulgent attempt at reviewing Dinesh D'souza's 2016 left me thinking "Wow. This blog is really making a boring and unsuccessful reach."

I assumed Forbes would be on our side. I am sick of receiving friendly fire by those thought were allies. The peggy noonan types who feel they have to attack consevatives to gain credibility can GTH.

Now that I think about it, if a blog post begins with, “Back when I was in college” or “One time at band camp” you can just stop reading right there. haha!
